PKD was an ideas man, his wild and trippy concepts are more interesting than the way he'd put them on paper and he wrote rather hurriedly, he was basically the Stephen King of sci-fi but more consistent.You can say that there are better writers in the genre but his creativity can't be denied, and personally I think that his style has a special charm that draws me in

His short stories are great, and genuinely funny. Go read "We can remember it for you wholesale" the short story Total Recall was "based" on. Its short as fuck and is just one big set up for a joke. They take a guy in, try to implant a false memory, realize he already has a memory block, then freaking out when they realize what that block was, and then deciding to kill him, only to discover another deeper locked memory: When he was a kid his dog tried to eat some tiny aliens that had arrived to destroy earth, and they were so grateful he saved them that they promised they wouldn't destroy earth as long as he was alive.

Don't forget he was a writer in Berkley and SF through the 60's and 70's, there were a LOT of acid casualties. And the prevailing pharmacology of the mental health industry at the time was just to give them thorazine so they're doped up zombies that can't hurt anyone.
