I like the opening act, but I can absolutely make a good argument for chopping the movie way back. It is never going to live up to the original, which is a legitimate piece of film history, and despite it being nearly 100 years old it still stands up. If I had a time machine one of the places I would go is the debut screening of king kong just to be a fly on the wall and listen to people walking out of the theater, because the effects are STILL pretty good, and if it wasn't for Kong and O'Brien we wouldn't have Ray Harryhausen, and think about everything that guy contributed and inspired to the global imagination.

He got carried away and there was nothing internally or externally to put a check on the excess. It's still a really good movie, but it's 80 minutes longer than the original. That's kind of ridiculous.If you ask me his best movie is still Heavenly Creatures.
This is the last movie where it actually feels like an adventure. There is actual danger. People die and they die horribly. There is no irony, no one makes a comment on how ridiculous their situation is. They just accept that there are still blank spots left in the map.The filmmakers know that Ann and Kong's relationship is the heart of the story and they played it completely straight, even giving them a "dancing on the ice" scene. I think its straightforwardness comes across as too cringey to a lot of millennials so they made fun of the Ann and Kong scenes, which eventually led to movies like Guardians of the Galaxy where everything is a fucking joke.
