The best episode was written by them and it's proto-Pine Barrens with the two old guys traveling in the snowy mountains to bury an old friend.Janine Turner was fantastic. First couple seasons had super charming soul and that Twin Peaks town vibe, loved the whimsical radio host and magical realism, contrasted with the obvious Woody Allen, NYC Jewish neuroticism and film nerdism. But after a couple of seasons it started losing its charm.

This effectively made Joel's kvetching superfluous and the show was fully about the side characters, who are infinitely more interesting with their quirks and shit. Joel/Rob could've tapped out at any point and the show would not miss a beat. But then they got this new doc and made him the center of the show and that was just pathetic so it sent the show into a nosedive. That guy wasn't even needed at that point.
