When this film was released, comedies were still a popular big budget genre of Hollywood film. In the same year this came out, so did Anchorman, Meet the Fockers, White Chicks, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle & Shaun of the Dead.Napoleon Dynamite was so popular because it broke peoples' expectations of a comedy film by comparison and it wasn't some GenX postmodernist film like Being John Malkovich, it was because it threaded this line between earnestness and irony. The protagonist is this huge loser, all his friends and family are weirdos too but you still want him to win in the end. Ironic humour was huge at the time so it really struck a nerve in the popular consciousness that's difficult to describe if you weren't alive at the time.
