GiTS 95 is actually a miracle.
It the only example I can think of where the adaptation is vastly superiour to the source material. How did they do it?
>>
OP is a pseud.
>>
>>222808536
Mixture of strong art style and animation, ambience-heavy soundtrack, Oshii being into masculine chicks, and fairly straightforward transhumanism and AI themes. It generally has aged well too, but its better scenes have become so iconic that they underwhelm now when actually watching the film, and aside from those scenes, it offers little animation-wise.

Japanese stuff being very Japanese-y isn't for everyone, or most people. That's why they stick to DBZ and such.
Your loss. Episode 7 was a visual treat.
>>
I liked 1995 Ghost in the Shell but it was product of its time just like Akira. There was a whole movement of this deep atmospheric cyberpunk you cannot recreate today, so expecting something similar in 2026 is stupid. If you like 1995 movie just rewatch it. Stop giving attention to new media, just stick with old stuff. There's enough for it for your whole lifetime.

Never. I could never be so mindrotted as to give up on the present and future. Some old things not being redoable is hardly a worry since a lot of new things wouldn't have been doable back then. Things being products of their times is neither positive nor negative.

of course it can be a negative. Look at current hollywood, then say that again. Or even this new Ghost in the Shell, it’s fucking slop. I got in three or four episodes, and told myself, no more. I agree with you about not watching something simply because it’s new or old, but I’m also not watching trash, because it is based on something that was good once. The show isn’t fun, or funny, or exciting. The action sucks, it’s boring. Just admit it anon. You are watching, because you don’t know what else to watch.

Okay? I don't see the issue. For one, Hollywood isn't the only place making movies. And as far as the quality of Hollywood's output goes, survivorship bias is doing a lot of heavy lifting justifying your type of opinion.
>Just admit it anon. You are watching, because you don’t know what else to watch.
TGitS is fun. The writing, sloppy as it may be, is no worse than Innocent's or even 1995's for the most part. To say I'm watching it because I don't know what else to watch is hilarious, seeing how there are at least 5 watch-worthy seasonal anime airing.

Most people that comment on shows on social media haven't even watched them. Its like 30% have never seen anything, 40% watch tiktok or youtube summaries only, and of the 30% that did, most are doing it on a phone or on a screen while also on their phone, or in a little pop out window in the corner while they play a game or whatever. Maybe 10% of people talking about a show actually gave it their full attention, and that's optimistic.

It's only 'deep and atmospheric' because the film is slow and doesn't have a lot of movement for most of its runtime.
You are a psychological mirror that just replicates the tone and style of the show you're watching.
It is shallower and dumber than the '26 version. But characters frown and stare off into space more so you interpret it as deeper.

Bottom is a better adaption of Ghost in the Shell. And no the entire thing isn't goofy, there are moments of goofiness and a whole lot of serious stuff. The goofy moments are in keeping with the actual manga. The 90s movie is great but its not a good adaption.

No i like gits. All the "shitty" anime that /a/ days is overrated, i think is the peak of the medium. I'm just not that entertained by very simple very ugly art. Gits had wooden dialogue already and is not deep. And it is still ten times more bearable then whatever flat color dramed low framerate garbage im sure you claim to like. Not like people from /a/ ever actually say they like something. Because that would invite them to be subject to actual criticism. Even in defending The girs new anime, you could only say you liked it in context of the 1995 one. You said nothing positive about the show itself.

Bullshit. The manga, and by extension the new series is better than the Oshii movie. And Stand Alone Complex mogs both, honestly. I don't get why people like the movie so much, it's so dull and ponderous. The only Oshii flicks I like are his live action comedies. Talking Head is really good and Red Spectacles is a masterpiece. Seriously, it's like a low budget Japanese Brazil.
>>
>>222808431
Both seem fine to me, there's room for both. It sucks that the 90s anime style is a lost art and won't that type of visual will never be produced again, but you can always go back and revisit it.

I don't have a problem with them usually, but tenet specifically was a headache to comprehend the mechanics of.
For example, let's say you're fighting a masked version of yourself, and trying to enter a turnstile. Reversed-you escapes and flees the scene. Why do you not enter the turnstile?
>>
>>222815069
Because the turnstile was a metaphor for the stages in your life. You weren't ready to progress yet.
>>
>>222814880
Well code geass definitely had it's own style which makes it much more watchable. But if you don't like stuff that acts deeper than it is, then i didn't know how you could enjoy code geass. Haven't seen it since middle school, but i remember a fuckton of exposition over very simple concepts. A problem that tons of anime suffers from.
Ive been meaning to watch ping pong. Looks original.

The other two are what i was talking about. Unoriginal art, bland characters, lame unoriginal music, tone deaf...etc. All of which are so obviously present just by looking them up on Google images. They look identical to sword art online and i bet they are about as deep.

I have yet to see any anime that is longer than 3 seasons and worth it. You cannot imagine my disappointment when i watched 1997 berserk and waited years for a continuation of the plot, only to find that it suffered anime rot. Complete with blushing lolis and a annoying generic child following around his hero who also never gives up. So god damn lame.

I thought gits was a beautiful movie and at least iconic scenes. It's a movie i can put on for a gf, a close friend, or just a get together. It's a classic, like the matrix or naked gun. Meanwhile the show will go back on the shelf of derivative lazy semi fleshed animes.

I don't know what I expected but it wasn't that. Well it's /tv/ so I guess I should have expected something like that.
Anyways as a fob you're going to have to learn some rules to enjoy anime. First rule is 99.9% of the time anime is not going to tell a complete story. It's advertisement for a manga or book. Berserk 1997 stands on it's own and needs nothing else to be appreciated.
Secondly anime is beloved mostly for it's earnestness. American media is based on irony and not being able to enjoy anything at face value because they are terrified of revealing their true feelings and being judged.
Almost every anime has at least one thing it does well. Often times that's enough, you can enjoy it for that thing even if it doesn't come together to be a masterpiece.
>>
>>222815069
Because you didn’t enter the turnstile right before fighting yourself, the you you fought is you from two weeks in the future doing a temporal pincer movement. The movie was straightforward as fuck, people trick themselves into thinking it’s more confusing than it is. Anyway the whole movie is an excuse for Nolan to film interesting action scenes, the movie itself even tells you to just stfu and watch a guy reverse Bungie jump onto a building.

>American media is based on irony and not being able to enjoy anything at face value because they are terrified of revealing their true feelings and being judged.
Biggest reason i don't watch new movies. If lethal weapon were made today, mel would constantly be quipping about depression. But i think that I'm general people are getting tired of that "hey guys isnt it nuts we are in a movie?" Kind of dialogue.

But anime definitely has it's own problems with being "genuine". Like i watched all of great teacher onizuki because when it was good it was great. I guess what I'm trying to say is that anime needs better editors in general. Because when they actually try to cut the fat from their shows and movies they are insta classics. Like i get wanting to have a huge titted femme fatale, but maybe you dont need a pervy old guy that gets a nosebleed in the bathouse? Like why waste 5 minutes for that scene? Like you said it's honest which is better then dishonesty. Like i can watch and enjoy inuyasha, and i cannot watch modern western shows or movies, but i think alot of anime watchers see that and think they have to embrace all aspects of anime tropes. Its just very grating. I watched all of outlaw Star, and thought holy cow is that cat girl hot, but the whole harem of hot bitches severly tanked the narrative of the stories in each episode.

Women are inherently sexual by their very nature. Everything about them from their bodies to their voices to their very thoughts are all built for the purpose of attracting a mate.

I've seen the others you mentioned, loved all of them. The monogatari series has been on my watch list forever but I'm bad about starting very long series it's hard to get the motivation. Every year I say it's the year I'm going to watch LOGH and it never happens.
Thanks for the reqs, I'll check out those other three I'm sure I'll enjoy them.

Hey buddy every creature is sexual in nature. Yet here we are wearing clothes. Because unlike animals we have things like nuance, and more going on in our head then just fucking. So when i want to draw a cool robot i don't have to make it a porno everytime. Like how in sound of music the nuns arent all big titted bimbos like they are in many anime. And Americans are very very far from puritan. If they were more puritan their media would be much better. Much like japan's is when they don't think like you. As in chronic masturbater. Yes japan makes media not centered around porn. Not that you would know because your problem is you have no taste.

FMA 2003 is also another case. Brotherhood is badly paced and filled with le funny face scenes on top of having immeasurably worse direction, and otakus like it because it's more faithful to the manga. Anime fans have zero taste or discernment of art.

to be fair the silly-wiggle and scary-face stuff is a manga thing to visually indicate the tone of voice a character is using. In an anime its redundant and pointless, as the voice actor will simply use the appropriate tone of voice.
>>
>>222811065
it's basically calcification and ossification
anime was such a successful export that the demand for all other animation was strangled, now anime is the only thing they know how to make and teach
the same thing is happening with gacha games, they're so ludicrously successful that there's zero incentive to make anything else and all of asia is caught in the orbit

Not an expert, just not someone who's in denial. Certain manga-isms are appropriate in anime, like the sweat-drop and dread-lines, as those would be non-vocal cues. But anything meant to visually indicate a tone of voice is redundant when there's a voice actor.

The key to selecting animated works is to only ever watch stuff where the art and animation looks amazing, looks smooth, looks expressive, and looks expensive.

It sounds counterproductive but your topmost consideration must be the quality of the animation itself. It is always, 100% of the time, a reflection of the level of care that has gone into the finished product. There will never be a piece of media that has an amazing worthwhile story but which looks like Season 3 of One Punch Man or this GitS reboot slop. The moment you get the feeling something is trading on its name and cutting corners on animation, you're over it.

It can't look like it was made in a Korean sweatshop by the lowest bidder. It HAS to look like dozens of artists poured years of their lives into making this thing, like a labour of love, even though they knew that it was only going to be seen by a handful of autists and make no money. If you follow this rule the worst you will ever see is an average story with beautiful animation.
>>
>>222808431
>music and TV used to feature gritty, melancholic stories
>everyone was happy
>nowadays, every piece of media revolves around cheerful, enthusiastic stories
>everyone is anxious and depressed
it’s an interesting phenomenon to note

I like both. Obviously Oshii's adaptation is one of the best anime movies made (though not one of his own best) but that doesn't mean the new one needs to aim for the same highs. Basically yeah. Oshii does this for most stuff he touches though. His Patlabor movies are also vastly superior and not even comparable to the regular Patlabor.

Shirow has always been mediocre. His version of GITS is Appleseed tier at best. That´s just the extent of his skills. GITS only got big because of Oshii. That said it´s not the only adaptation superior to its source. Kazuhiro Furuhashi Rurouni Kenshin Tsuioku-hen is one of the best anime movies out there and it´s also vastly superior to Watsuki´s original story albeit true enough, unlike Shirow, Watsuki is actually competent.

Honestly those kind of adaptations were what got me into anime so seeing all the new ones feels kind of painful.

I've watched the whole show and it is genuinely annoying how they will be covering material very grim and dramatic and then someone's head will swell up to 400% size

No? 80s were a pretty good decade for Japan, thanks to the economic rise and all the technology japs were producing at a fast rate, but the 90s were a fucking terrible decade for Japan. 90s Japan was full of economic bombs, sinking businesses, the rise of hikikomoris, and sky-high suicide rates. Your point about budgets also makes sense. Anime looking bad or good depends on the skill of the artists and animators, not the amount of money a studio has. Also, 80% of anime in the 80s and 90s looked like pic rel. Good-looking anime like GITS were in the minority.

Standalone Complex is amazing and the peak of the franchise. It's a fantastic cyberpunk detective anime with great art, fantastic animation, GOD TIER soundtrack by Yoko Kano, great writing, exciting action, characters that are not only intellectual but also human and charismatic for once, and a really cool storytelling that constantly switches between the main plot and episodic stories that flesh out the world. It has entertainment value without being shlocky like the original manga while also being intellectual without being boring, pretentious, and artsy fartsy like the movie.

You should probably read the original manga sometime. Its the embodiment of wide as an ocean deep as a puddle. Oshii establishes more in two lines of dialogue than most of the manga does.
>>
>>222826065
Why is this new series so hideous?

>>
>>222826283
Because its trying to imitate the original manga's style without any real understanding of why it worked in the first place.
>>
>>222826337
If it "worked" then why did every adaptation change it?
>>
>>222826277
Not really. Oshii emphasizes differently, but it's not as though he achieves anything remarkable with GitS. Motoko fusing with the artificial consciousness that is the Puppet Master is only somewhat unique, and hardly that meaningful.
>>
>>222826065
I like the bounciness of all the tits in this but its not GitS. The only good GitS animation was the original one and every time they try to reboot and redraw everything it just erodes the iconic look and tone more, flanderizing and cartoonizing it more than the original's tachikomas ever did.

I'm sure this will be a fun one.

This is meant to be an anime website but I get the feeling the portion of people who actually like anime are very few. I'm amongst those who dislike 90% of anime other than a very narrow snapshot of high-quality/film-quality 80s and 90s anime films and occasionally porn.

All other anime since and especially today is equivalent to garbage to me.

Call me a pleb but I enjoy the new GITS more than i did the 90s movie. Its weird going back to the 90s movie and it actually making sense now as the plot of the puppet master is kind of transplanted and chopped up. In the first 2-3 viewings i really had no fucking idea of what was going on plot-wise. Oshii is great at atmosphere but its at the expense of literally every other aspect of the film. GITS and honestly a lot of his other films are barely coherent. Angel's egg comes to mind. The new show seems to be able to do the more lighthearted stuff but with genuine kino peppered in there, episode 7 being a great example. The artstyle is also gorgeous.

the new Ghost in the Shell is way better than I was expecting. This is the first time GITS has been good since Stand Alone Complex anime in the early 2000's. I was starting to lose faith after the string of garbage they have been shitting out for the past 20 years.

>Oshii establishes more in two lines of dialogue
Dialogue is atrocious to create depth in a visual medium. It doesn't work. The way to create depth is the organic or even inorganic use of layers of symbols. If you try to establish themes with dialogue, especially the kind straight out of philosophy class, you create a disconnect with the flow of visuals, and a particularly bad one if the visuals don't at least mirror said dialogue's theme.
>>222826868
Anime isn't dead. You are.

I remember trying to watch Ghost in the Shell back in like 2000 because of a friend, who was really into asian animation. I never figured out what was so great about it. Felt it was nonsensical and the pacing was off. Style over substance.
>>
>>222827226
>I never figured out what was so great about it
Does it really matter? I watched it for anime tiddies and action scenes
>>
>>222808536
It's the number one greatest and most important anime ever made. It should be mandatory viewing for everyone. It's especially important to think about the ideas the film discusses now more than ever before for obvious reasons.
>>
>>222826966
A good example for a recent movie with minimum dialogue would be Motor City. It works wonderfully through its visuals... except that you never get fully immersed because chubby, wrinkly Shailene Woodley is very poorly cast as the object of desire and reason for mayhem.

You don’t watch shit on mute so you can just stop with this bullshit. As all it amounts to is (you) having trouble following dialogue and looking at the sceen, read: you’re mentally retarded and easily overloaded.

It's about rhythm, fuck nigga. Elaborate dialogue demands long pauses of motion. It works well in a medium where the consumer dictates pace, but not in film. Theatre gets away with it mainly because of theatrical acting, but film rarely employs that. Inefficient shit is inefficient whether your IQ's 80 or 140.
>>222827570
I don't. Think I've mentioned her two times total.
>>
You guys are all watching the new Oshii Votoms films right?
>>
>>222826382
Yeah man. An artificial consciousness naturally evolving/emerging from a cyber warfare program, rebelling and trying to escape and then becoming involved with a human who’s been mostly converted into a physical warfare machine, composed of so much property tech that she’d be a nothing but a few scraps of brain matter if she quit, is just tots passé
>>
>>222826358
Because manga and anime are different mediums and what works in one doesn’t necessarily work in the other.

Considering I’m referring to the meeting kusanagi is monitoring in the first scenes of ‘95, lmao. Also at the idea of “elaborate dialogue.” You really are a mental midget.
>>

? What does that have to do with the new anime?

I don't find any of that hard to conceptualize nor, again, very meaningful.

>Considering I’m referring to the meeting Kusanagi is monitoring in the first scenes of ‘95
I don't recall there being an essential difference between how the 2026 anime handled it and how Oshii's did.
>You really are a mental midget.
If you say so.

I know. That's two times you were oddly obsessed with a woman's appearance,
going out of your way to critique it. You couldn't just suspend your disbelief and
think "people have different tastes", you had to make a point of saying
she's "chubby and wrinkly". Not normal behavior.
I'm diagnosing you with "literal nigger disease" and sentencing you to life on 4chan, or,

What did you think about the relationship between the emergent but “artificial” conciseness being considered property despite the fact it was able to free itself under its own power, vs how kusanagi is maybe 1% human and utterly dependent upon proprietary technology to exist at all and could only be hypothetically released from servitude with the cooperation/permission of her employers, but is still recognized as human?

I think it borders on the homosexual to waste time on things like that. You are not gonna change my impression of you for the better, anon; only downhill from here.
