Yes, Substance addiction is a horrible illness that we still can only treat the symptoms. It drives people to do terrible things and they are rarely blameless but thats not an excuse to just let someone die alone in a gutter. Being addicted to something should not be a crime, but committing crimes to get money for drugs is a perfect reason to lock them up, try and detox them as best as possible and try and help them develop the skills to come out as better people. The biggest problem is when their released right back into the people and culture that created the problem in the first place, cause that almost guarantee a relapse. TLDR simple possession of an illegal substance should not be a crime since its mostly just blaming and punishing the victims, there should be much harsher sentences for the people who make, transport, and sell the shit. Removing the stigma of admitting you have a problem and want to get help without the fear of having to detox in prison would go a long way in making people actually want to recover. Also just stop bothering people who just want to use weed, prohibition and shaming people for having a medical condition doesn't help anyone. I will say Leto's girlfriend was a that fashion designer chick was clearly the one instigating and escalating with her constant gaslighting and emotional manipulation.
