Zach Cregger's Resident Evil film is a generic horror film with a horrible "well, that was a waste of time" ending, and The Flood is a retarded version of Sphere+Event Horizon. (The script leaked a while ago.) We are going to see the "Cregger can do no wrong" narrative wear out really fast over the next two years.

You are who you choose to be."What Cregger's script is missing is any sense that Bryan's actions and ostensible character arc have any bearing on the ending. Nemesis dies because he decides that he will not allow Umbrella to win. That he can reclaim himself. The theme of Cregger's film is supposedly about fatherhood and accepting/not running anymore. But Bryan leaves this tearful voice mail and then displays no growth, gets everyone killed, the movie ends. It's a huge "fuck you" that I can't believe Sony are letting release. It makes the entire film feel like a waste of time. The original RE film did not feel like a waste of time.
Bryan is bizarrely similar to Jade from the Netflix show. Right down to leaving a sobbing voice mail for her partner and child and then surviving, displaying zero growth, and getting more people killed.

Some of the test screening leaks basically say that Bryan isn't a character you're supposed to take seriously, and his journey is meant to be seen as a kind of comedy of errors. But in that case it's not clear to me why anyone would want to see this film. People watch movies, generally, to see characters they find interesting or compelling. One test screening said that he's basically a walking plot device and there's no exposition or world building or anything. And they try to frame this as a positive thing. That the movie is 90 minutes of watching a character you don't care about get fucked up and then turn into a monster and kill everyone.
