IIRC it is based on the original BluRay release, but they painstakingly restored the original theatrical colors that were only ever accurately released with the DVD version.The official 4k Bluray looks worse than the 1080p Bluray release because of extensive digital noise reduction that smooths out all the film grain, and removes details (top of gandalfs staff in one shot in RotK, wrinkles on actors faces etc).Just get the Dwalin Color Restoration for Fellowship to remove the green tint, and the regular 1080p Bluray releases for the other two movies. Definitive version.
