New to TNG going through the whole series right now and now into season 3. Why did the movies and the modern Picard series make it seem like Picard and Data were lifelong best friends? They were friendly and friends but they weren’t even great friends. If anything Data and Geordi were closer to best friends.

Troi too, I guess but their relationship could be seen as part of her duties as counselor. So Data might still think of Geordie as his best friend but by the end of the series he's partnered up with Picard just as often.

Because the writers of the films didn't know how to do anything that wasn't Kirk/Spock, so they recycled that relationship despite there being no context for it. They also turned Picard into Kirk, effectively.TNG ends with All Good Things. Everything after is just money laundering.

Do you think Picard hung out with Riker listening to him rape a trombone when they were off duty? He couldn't even get Riker to pay attention when he was trying to explain archeology stuff to him. Data was the only non female crewmember whose company Picard seems to enjoy.

I think his PTSD from being a Borg actually made that worse for a while Over time he softened up, and by the end he knew he should have been closer to them. Data ended up close with him due to Measure of a Man, and the many times Data and him did stuff. Data also saved the entire ship a few times because by having robot immunity to situations. Picard likely respected that a lot.
>>222813483Like others have said the movies were trying to replicate Kirk/Spock but also Data was the most popular TNG character so they had to make sure he always had a major role in each movie. Making him BFFs with the protagonist is an easy way of doing that.
