Being a superhero is now treated as the steady state; living a normal life is treated as degrading; ironically, superheroes are both better than ordinary people and devalued as a result. There are no stakes in the danger to the public, and there's nothing special or exciting about saving the day. Tobey's Peter Parker, on the other hand, valued his ordinary life more than his hero responsibilities, and even tried to quit in the second movie, and was happy to. Being Spider-Man had meaning because it protected something that had value.

The whole point of the movie is Peter dealing with the emotional fallout of having his personal life ruined by being a superhero and how it cost him everybody close to him. He was devastated by that and retreated fully into the Spider-Man persona as a way to run from it and cope. His whole arc in the movie is wrestling with the two sides of himself, and his responsibility. Like, it's still not as well crafted as the first couple Raimi movies, sure, but with some of the things people are saying about it, I have to wonder if you even watched the movie?

>>222815912idk I thought the Punisher and Hulk were handled well. they didn't feel like they were setting up other stories or like you had to watch other material to understand why they were there, they were just supporting characters that made the world feel more lived in. if you're going to do a shared universe, that's exactly how to handle it. Jean Grey was the only one who really felt like a backdoor pilot character. I'm fine with other heroes playing supporting roles like that if they're integrated well. they really should have dropped Ned and MJ though, their story was done, it would have been a better emotional arc to have Peter move on from them and then you could have introduced more Spidey supporting characters, maybe get him into the Daily Bugle and everybody there
