The subtitles were written in English, translated to Japanese, translated to an older Japanese, and then re-translated back into English. The writers think that this is absurdly clever, but it put far too much emphasis on the Japanese actors acting with their body language instead of with their oration- and most of their body language is as cold and miserable as the weather. The grade-school tier dialogue goes on and on about having 'three hearts,' but they don't actually demonstrate that via dialogue or via acting. The entire Toranaga plot is basically reading the script instead of following any coherent narrative. Mariko's gambit about being a hostage would have worked just as well in Episode 3 as it would have in Episode 9-10. The show intentionally implying that Toranaga only has one son, have that son die, and then the very next episode says "But it's okay, you have other sons," that we never see on screen. I get characters pretending to be fake people, but everything feels fake. It's not meta, it's sloppy. Toranaga's last line, "He makes me laugh," makes absolutely zero sense- there's never a single scene they share together in which they enjoy each other's company. It makes absolutely zero sense.
