Woody Allen’s New Madrid-Set Movie Comes With Millions in Public Funding — and a Few Strings Attached

>Over the past two decades, Woody Allen has delivered a string of cinematic love letters to Europe — from Barcelona to Rome to Paris — some of them carrying the glossy allure of tourist postcards. His late-career focus on Europe intensified after his already divisive profile in Hollywood took a hit when longstanding sexual abuse allegations resurfaced during the #MeToo era.

>His next film is taking his European sojourn one step further: Scheduled to shoot from Oct. 5 in Madrid, the still-untitled project is being backed by millions in public funding tied explicitly to showcasing the Spanish capital on screen.

>[...]

>Some €3 million ($3.5 million) — $2.9 million after VAT deductions — is coming through grants from the Madrid Regional Government, announced last October, and Madrid City Council, made public in December.

>Building on that base, Allen’s next film can aim to raise a further €4 million in Spain through a mix of tax credits ($2.3 million), a grant from Spanish film agency ICAA ($1.1 million) and a first-window TV prebuy ($1.1 million). That would still leave some $5.8 million to $7 million to be raised from international sales, a considerable challenge. Without the Madrid grants, however, Allen’s new film would probably not be made at all.

>Four newly 4K-restored features by Thai auteur Apichatpong Weerasethakul have been acquired by The Match Factory for international sales, the company has revealed, with a formal launch planned for the upcoming Venice International Film Festival.

>The quartet spans more than a decade of Weerasethakul’s work: “Blissfully Yours” (2002), recipient of the Un Certain Regard Prize at Cannes; “Tropical Malady” (2004), winner of the Cannes Jury Prize; “Syndromes and a Century” (2006), which bowed in Competition at Venice; and “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives” (2010), which claimed the Palme d’Or at Cannes. The Match Factory holds rights in all territories except North America, the U.K., Ireland, Japan, Switzerland, and Thailand.

>So the only comfort zone for me is, is it only gonna be as good as what we feed in? And therefore come back with what is better. My concern is it won't go way beyond that. Cause if I design the first AI, honestly the first thing I want you to do is design an AI smarter than you. Then I'm going to get rid of him and say now, AI 2, design an AI smarter than you are. And you put them together and say "now dance". You're in deep shit at that point.

>Well, film makes you think horizontally, vertically, and sideways. So, I'm doing Blackhawk Down, and so I'm going to use eleven cameras. If I didn't use eleven cameras, I'd still be shooting it.

>Science to me is an art form. I've talked to a great mathematician who said to me: "When you're writing a script or preparing a script, do you ever get barriers?" And I said yeah, because when I hit a wall on the third act, sometimes I have to back off, go left, see if I lose this I can go through the wall. He said that's mathematics. So, mathematics and art are the same thing. So what I do, I think is kind of a form of science.

Spielberg lost me with the triple combo of The Big Fucking Guy, The Post, and Ready Player One.
West Side Story was perfectly fine, but felt completely unnecessary next to the 1961 version. Spielberg's vision wasn't fresh or interesting enough to fully justify another adaptation of the musical. The Fabelmans was one of the worst films of its year. A total embarrassment. Spielberg indulging in some of his worst habits. Haven't bothered with Disclosure Day yet.

Malick > Bergman
Scorsese > Godard
Spielberg > Kurosawa

As you can see, old directors only win once and they lose in the other three comparisons.

That we should always strive to be the best version of ourselves, always the most "openminded" version of ourselves even if it means taking everything at face value. I remember countering her with "what about the version of ourselves we're most content with" and she said that wasn't good enough and then I asked what exactly was good enough and of course, she didn't have an answer for that. Then I asked her if the best version of her is a server at a chain restaurant and she did not like that, I tell ya.

I agree with her. She has a more ascetic vision of life, we should not be the version "we're most contented with", we should always try to achieve our ideal selves. Your vision seems more hedonistic, you're basically saying that "as long as I can dive myself in pleasure I'm content", that's kinda gross actually.

The way I see it, Barry, the word "art" includes awful art and high brow art. Intent is what matters. What makes something art for me is the stimulation of senses in order to create an emotional response. Art lies in implication as Breedy Bobby put it.

Shitting is not art to me, it's a necessary biological function of your body intended to dispose of waste.

Which guys, Sutcliffe Jugend, Whitehouse or PE in general? OG PE had a lot of trolling, satire and humor applied to it, while modern PE is so self serious and self important that it loses me a lot of the time. I like how stuff like Whitehouse commented on the hypocrisy of moralist rhetorics in art via the commentary on sensationalism... you still can catch people that shit on Whitehouse or Trevor Brown's works because they talk about shit like CP and rape but they have no problem listening to death metal songs about killing pregnant women or reading yellow journalism articles about the said subjects which they condemn in art. Give the genre a chance if you got an interest in noise and the subversive, it's pretty cool.

I don't really try to rationalize pedophilia in the sense of relativizing it in moral terms, but I do think you'd have to be pretty much a complete idiot to think that people making art about it in a subversive tradition and ethos a la Bataille or Sade is a "morally reprehensive action", specially when you consider that the moralizing proselytists are almost always hypocritical about their consumption of socially questioned rhetorics in art.

>no problem listening to death metal songs
Death metal is way more digestible as music so it makes sense for someone not into unconventional structures and focus on texture would find PE and noise unlistenable no matter the subject matter. I know someone in a death metal band who can't even listen to noise rock (I ran some Rapeman by him) because it's "too loud".
>>

>>
>>222832895
I think you're purposefully ignoring the fact that it doesn't take a strict moralist stance to recognize that pedophilia is wrong and there's no need to proselytize or dissuade someone into recognizing that, maybe you aren't but trying to entangle someone in an endless bind of "rhetoric" won't work on anyone with half a brain

Thinking about the time when C.C.C.C. did a live show on Italian TV. Kino of the highest order.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bs3GcoZ-ecs
>>
>>222832995
I don't think it's about death metal being more digestible, but rather that the aesthetics of death metal seem more over the top and cartoonish than the frankly realist portrayals of human suffering present in PE. Basically, people can laugh at women getting raped if it's a cartoon, but not if it is a movie pretending to be reality.

>>222833034
In this case, it's not about right or wrong, but rather the function that the subject has in art and the reception it gets by moralists who get their panties soiled thinking of some guy making a song called "When I Grow Up, I'll Rape Your Kids". If they were for real with their ethics, they wouldn't waste their time opposing something that is clearly made with artistic intent in mind, and they would oppose real forms of pedophilia. These people are just against freedom of speech and freedom of expression, that's all, kinda like that time in the 90s and early 00s when christians wanted to cancel anime in the west for being satanic, same with heavy metal music, but they never cared about actually "satanic" stuff happening in their communities like crime, rape and child abuse. It's all hypocrisy and moral posturing.

Are we under the impression that there is a strict universal "human nature" and it's not all just learned behaviors from your social environment?
>>222833880
Thanks for clearing that up. I was about to ask you if you are gay and watch trans porn.

Bruh Mick Jagger literally admitted in his most recent interview at 83 years old that he chose to be bisexual in his younger years and that now he is straight again. He didn't say it like in a clear direct way obviously. He said something about sexuality being a choice but he meant being attracted to the opposite gender is instinctual and unavoidable and being attracted to the same sex is a decision one makes.

If something is an imperative, that means it's default, like gasping for air, and homosexuality is just something that happens regardless of the commonness of heterosexuality, which is why I think it's actually sexual diversity that's imperative, and not sexual homogeneity. This would be kinda like saying having white skin is a biological imperative, when evidence shows that diversity is actually the imperative in nature.

Human nature is in fact complex but to not consider homosexuality irrational and abnormal, is dishonest and irresponsible. If you take a look at blacks, how they practice pack mentality and respond with violence globally, throughout the world and not just here, this is an example of human nature and not the feminine and false socioeconomic factor excuse.

>homosexuality is just something that happens
As a result of abnormality and mental illness within the mammal.

What happens about the outliers to your theory? Are people like Obama, Spike Lee, Malcolm X, Shaq, Kobe, etc. violent rapists? Dissociating from socieconomic and educational factors in the explanation of violence in ethnic groups is a grave mistake, methinks.

Looking forward to it Fixbrother

Obama and Malcolm X are/were inherently evil people, deriving support and prioritizing primitive, malicious, lowbrow, debased, corrupted people who are more akin to animals than human beings. The Wire recieved great acclaim from the false portrayal of blacks as intellectuals and David Simon got rich off malicious intent.
Also, I'm sure you know, Malcolm Xs undoing was brought on by the very same people he naively championed.
>Nigger, get your hand outta my pocket.

Also
>is Kobe a violent rapist?
Affirmative.

I mean, I could go all day talking about noteworthy black people, but you just don't care because you actually are convinced differences in behavior reside only in genetics and not in education or access to opportunities. If I said "was Sydney Poitier a bad guy? How about Morgan Freeman?" you'd just say yes and yes because they're black. You don't even care about investigating about people's characters before assesing a judgement, you just make the judgement then justify it via cerebral spaghetti code.

>>222834283
Whataboutism and outliers are the very source that blacks feed off of to get their foot in the door in places they do not belong in, it's incredibly irresponsible and of course dangerous to defend such a lowly, cretinous tribe who would never, under any circumstances, do the same for you.
>>
What movie made you think "Ah, so that's what movies are."
>>
>>222834321
Mmm, yeah, but the thing at hand in here is how to unfuck a racist's mind. I actually think it's interesting how they get all these fucked up ideas about reality which are based on half truths all of the time, and I do think you could basically unfuck them up, same with nazis and similarly radicalized people.

>>222834348
My best friends growing up were french american, latino american and black american, so I know for a fact that the race shit is complete bullshit. If you take the worst specimens out of every race, of course it's gonna look like shit, it's kinda like I said "oh yeah, white people are so fucked up, they do meth all of the time and rob people for crack money and they fuck their cousins". It's obvious for anyone that the whites that do those kinds of things are not representative of the white race at large and are largely byproducts of their insanely retarded beliefs and non existent education and economic stability.

Do you mean movies or do you mean /film/s?

good luck, but you aren't going to get anywhere with someone whose racism is essentially part of their personality, like how i imagine this guy to be. it might be possible with some people, but i guess this will just play out like a thought experiment.
>>
>>222834491
>but i guess this will just play out like a thought experiment.
which now that i think about it is pretty comedy gold, because this is the same guy who wanted to ban freedom of expression with regards to gay people, because it's harmful toward children... while simultaneously expressing racists beliefs which could radicalize people in this very thread and could indirectly harm black people. lol. lmao.
>>
>>222834435
racism clouds critical thinking :( racists draw conclusions first and then cherry pick evidence to support that conclusion... observing the effect part of cause and effect and basing the "cause" on pseudoscience. you can't convince these people out of it with rational arguments since they weren't rationalized into those beliefs

I was insanely racist from years 14-17 because I became best friends with a nazi guy and my entire friend group also turned from mixed race to pretty much all white in like one year. I left all that shit behind, and also the proto-incel shit I was starting to spout when I realized it was all retarded because I read a marxist book some guy online recommended to me (he was my only non nazi friend) and I understood Hitler's critique of marxism was a 100% based on strawmans. I literally lost all my friends in 1 year, then went back to hanging out with my normal friends like nothing happened. I understand the racist mind because I've been there, if anything, I think I was 10 years ahead of the curve because I can see a lot of the retarded shit I used to talk about being used by a lot of radicalized retards nowadays, specially the conspiracy / jewish shit.

You can say whatever you want about blacks morally speaking, but you can't deny that black excellence in music and sports is a reality. The majority of US stars worth a damn in modern sports are black, and that's a fact, same as people like Whitney Houston or Michael Jackson being massively talented as vocalists and dancers.

Not to mention blues and jazz musicians. White can't compete.

>white people do meth all the time and fuck their cousin
That's literally a black people thing lol Kanye West even made a song about giving his cousin head and it sparked a huge conversation in the African American community. Also you sound like someone who went to school with people from your same socio economic background. So your colored friends were basically white people.
>>
>>222835101
I grew up dirt poor, so I can tell you I've seen "degenerate" activity done by all ethnic groups. Also, check out the term "white trash" and you'll understand what I meant by meth and fucking their cousins.
>>
>>222835174
I am European so I went to school with people from all income brackets and black and nafri people are always the most likely to be trashy and lower class then southeast asians and Mediterranean people then natives and west euros and then east asians are usually the most consistently middle/upper class people. I'm just speaking for my country though, maybe in other country everyone is the same.
