She can sense how hard my dick is

>Ah Counselor Troi, glad you're here. We're in a tense episode with an outsider who may be deceiving us. Can you use your telepathic abilities to help us determine the truth?
>No....there's uh....space interference.
>He's on the ship with us right now, he's literally down the hall.
>No....I....the tachyons are....in retrograde...I can't sense anything
Seriously, I can count the number of times Troi's abilities were actually useful on one hand. Why did they even make her an empath? She could have just been a regular psychologist and nothing would change.

some of his changes were ridiculous though like he wanted to change the staff shifts from 3x 8 hour shifts per day to 4x 6 hour shifts per day or whatever for no reason and that's a huge overhaul to do on a ship that's in active service in a fucking warzone

If you're a normal person it's literally like magic. There are so many subtle cues that you couldn't analyze on a conscious level even if you wanted. You can make low-resolution distinctions like "smile" vs "frown" but the truth is it's so subtle that if you're an autist/aspburger trying to find a way to calculate emotion from consciously paying attention to visual data, I'm afraid your out of luck.

For a show/series that put heavy emphasis on rationality and science over faith, Troi's character stank of New Age nonsense, and I never understood why they made the counselor, of all things, a senior command staff member. She's basically a mood detector when we, the audience, can already clearly detect the intentions of the adversary of that week's episode.

Bro the 80s were a different time. Society was putting Christ in the cave and we needed a new religion STAT. Now remember all these shows are made by Californians. And they rip off science fiction stories from 1960s malthusian "humanists".

This is the same series that loves to boast about how humanity has ascended and left behind childish things like religion while also taking time to grovel over Native American spirituality.

I think part of it was confusion over the word "counselor". She was supposed to be a diplomatic counselor, which would make sense given all the encounters with new races, but the writers quickly forgot and had her just be a therapist instead.
Also, as >>222830032 alludes, most of Trek's weirdness can be blamed on the fact that it was the brainchild of a horny midcentury Californian idealist

>I think part of it was confusion over the word "counselor". She was supposed to be a diplomatic counselor, which would make sense given all the encounters with new races, but the writers quickly forgot and had her just be a therapist instead.
Nah, she was intended to be their therapist from the start, considering she specialized in psychology at Starfleet Academy.
>most of Trek's weirdness can be blamed on the fact that it was the brainchild of a horny midcentury Californian idealist
Almost all of the worst parts of Star Trek have to do with its society, and it stems from Gene's naive and honestly stifling idea of how society would turn out. I guess that's what I love about DS9 because it actually deconstructs how easily those ideas crumble in the face of chaos. Funny enough, I thought TOS did a better job of portraying it as fantasy versus TNG's smug moralizing.

Riker was just being a bitch. He didn't actually care about the schedule.
>>
>>222832238
Riker was genuinely a prick in these episodes. It was fine at the beginning, because everyone was expecting Jellico to be the cliche Evil Admiral (well, captain in this case) so Riker rebelling against his authority was going to be justified eventually. But then Jellico turned out to be a good captain who was just a bit of a hardass, and Riker *still* keeps acting like an asshole, for no reason.
