At least half of his films are shit. Is it because he has a cool name?

His good films far outweight the bad ones.
>>
>>222870150
not everything he made was good, but he has made some of the best movies in history.
shame he got dementia and decided to tarnish his reputation with the shit he is making now
>>
>>222870150
Dude needs a decent script and a tard wrangler. He's deteriorated a lot in the last 20 years but Kingdom Of Heaven was decent. And Prometheus is being reevaluated as an underrated kino. And The Martian was at the very least fun.
>>
his other half is good to great to masterpieces

where you there?

No. No it isn't. Never will be.

Tim Curry ;_;
>>
He's made like 80 movies and out of that about 6 or 7 are great so that means he beats out most directors who only have 1 or 2 great movies at best.
>>
Same thing with Coppola. He's got like three great movies and an ocean of shit, yet he's still one of the all time greats somehow.
>>
>>222870521
Coppola has
>Dementia 13
>Rain People
>Godfather 1&2
>The Conversation
>Apocalypse Now
>One From the Heart
>Rumble Fish
>The Cotton Club
>Peggy Sue Got Married
>Tucker
>Dracula
>Tetro
Ridley Scott has
>The Duellists
>Alien
>Blade Runner
>Legend
>Black Rain
Not really comparible at all, Coppola wins by a mile
>>
>>222870150
Alien is ass but people pretend it was kino. That's why. Same with Blade Runner. He's been coasting on two shit films for fifty years.
>>
Being great at something doesn't mean being perfect at it. /tv/ doesn't understand this because it's not full of people who actually create, it's full of 30-something manchildren who snipe snarkily from the sidelines at actual filmmakers whilst they themselves were too scared to take the risks necessary to actually be creative because they are terrified of failure.

Duder literally made Alien THEN Blade Runner, and also Gladiator, Black Rain, Thelma & Louise and Black Hawk Down. Yes some are boring and a bit off it, mostly the ones in the last couple of decades, but jfc he's made 3 films a lot of people have in their top 10 of all time and nearly everyone has Alien/Blade Runner in their top 5 sci-fi's. I even forgive FFC for all the shit he made after godfather/apocalypse now/the conversation
>>
>>222870826
Don't forget Megalopolis is going to go through a reevaluation and become like the prequel trilogy of the 2020s
>>
Thelma and Louise really that good according to this thread?
I thought it was just a movie about some feminist lesbians
>>
>>222870150
even his "bad" films are really entertaining to me. People love to shit on Prometheus and Napoleon but I really enjoy both. He is a better director then most working today. However I have next to no interest in dog stars.
>>
Black Hawk Down and Kingdom of Heaven are his best films. fight me nigger.
>>
>>222871185
Its a great bonnie and clyde movie and a great american road movie, made by a bong who had just done Black Rain and was known primarily for his sci-fi stuff. Think it suprised a lot of people despite making Ripley this feminist icon of sorts. Its a great script and in the National Film Registry for good reason. Looks amazing.
>>
>>222870150
>Why is Ridley Scott considered to be a great director?
Because alien and blade runner
>>
>>222870150
>Why is Ridley Scott considered to be a great director?

If you release Alien, Bladerunner, and Gladiator then you're a great director. Even if waiting for him to make a film on that level again is my version of waiting for Half Life 3

Apocalypse (theatrical) and Dracula are the only good films there.
>Legend
Awful

Mediocre film with outstanding cinematography from Jan de Bont

the fact that you niggers have multiple threads on him daily proves he's elite

fucking hell, most directors go entire careers without making anything that fucking amazing

Most great directors have made some pretty bad movies or shows

Midwits and redditors love
>Ridley Scott
>Christopher Nolan
>David Fincher
>Denis Villeneuve
>Robert Eggers

The ones who made Obsession and Backrooms? Are we really going to crown two directors who made middlebrow horror movies as some sort of great artists? At best they are Early Raimi tier
>>
>>222871161
I havrn't seen it but all the negative press surrounding it felt really forced, like Coppola was being blacklisted because he dared to self-fund his movie the way he wanted.
>>
>>222872466
I saw that for the Cannes(?) screening they had Driver do some sort of meta performance in the middle of the movie and I guess when it was in select AMC had local actors do the same thing when it was in theaters. Kind of bummed that my area didn't do something similar. Made me not want to see it since it feels like I'm missing out on something that is important to the movie.
>>
>>222871625
I don't believe you've even watched any of them let alone Apocalypse Now

making even 1 good movie is great

>always assume Tony Scott was cut down in his mid 40s or something at the peak of his promising career
>look it up
>died at 68

What's Ridley so fucked up about?
>>
>>222870826
Dishonest post. Scott has Gladiator I and II, Kingdom of Heaven, Black Hawk Down, The Last Duel, and Prometheus as well.
>>
>>222870150
>technically great
>a hit in every genre, just about
>more than a few certified classics
>'blue collar' director that started out in commerials

Most directors would die happy with just a Gladiator, or Duellist, or Alien, or Blade Runner.
>>
>>222870217
>Dude needs a decent script and a tard wrangler

Prometheus was made extremely dumber by Fox whom forced a zero film writing experience Lindelhof (Tribe) to turn it into Ancient Aliens. The co-writer did DUNE. Ridley's other strength is *usually* having the clout and cuntiness to tell studios to eat shit.
>>

Malick, though of course he is actually arthouseslop
>>
>>222870150
Because zoomers like you are too fucking retarded to understand Ross Whedon let alone Ridley Scott.
>>
He gets a ton of shit but he's made some fantastic films over the years and even when given a lesser script, he's a fucking incredible visual director. I think he's funny as fuck to listen to and all. He's a cantankerous old Geordie with absolutely no filter and it's hilarious when he goes off on one.
>>
>>222872651
I think everything except the story was fantastic
>>
>>222873219
>Malick
correct
>though of course he is actually arthouseslop
ya blew it
>>
>>222870150
He's got a good style. His films are good looking and his way of telling a story tends to be competent. It's less a case of every movie of his being good, it's more that you know that even in his dogshit movies like Robin Hood, you're still seeing a man who has the basics of moviemaking down so well he could do it in his sleep. His bad movies are usually just bad because they feel uninspired or boring, not for a lack of craft.

>>222872221
All good minus Eggers.
>>
>>222870952
all total hack work compared to the godfather or even rumble fish are you kidding
>>
>>222875347
Idk senpai, Matchstick Men and Gladiator are pretty kino.
I will say though that I don't think Scott sees himself as quite as much of a le artiste as Coppola. He's not trying to make the next Criterion picture most of the time so it's hard to compare them.
>>
>>222870150
>only half are shit
That's being really generous bro. He's realistically only got maybe 4 or 5 good ones.
>>
>>222875519
I actually think Coppola is way less pretentious than Ridley. Coppola's films always have soul and flavour even when they're bad. Ridley has composed banal, humourless films full of pretty pictures for his entire career.
>>
>>222872546
KINO
>>
>>222871923
Yeah Mia Sara was gorgeous. She's married to Jim Henson's son btw.
>>
I watched Gladiator 2 recently and his current camera technique of having about 12 cameras filming a scene in an array and then sorting it out in post is not working. The entire film just looks a bit murky because nothing has been lit or framed properly, so your eyes aren’t drawn to anything particular in a scene, it’s just visual noise. Can’t he take up gardening or something?
>>
>>222876689
I don’t know if this makes sense as a critique but he needs to make his films less gritty looking because it really exemplifies lazy filmmaking

>names one of his own movies as his top 4
why is he like this?
>>
>>222870234
Kek
>>
>>222870150
because he is visually extemely good director. He is detail oriented and can make shit look good, no matter the actual script. Scripts are his real weakness, as he doesn't seem to genuinley understand a difference between a good script and a bad script, but his understanding on how to make them into images is almost superhuman.
>>
>>222870826
Apocalypse Now mogs 99% of all films. Ridley couldn't cinematographize a minute close to it.
>>
>>222870211
I haven't seen new Ridley movies. What am in for? Why is he worse now? I have questions
>>
>>222877285
I think it's really about him being as old as he has. His visual style is as good as it has ever been, but he seems to be in a hurry and just pushes stuff out mechanically a lot of times, which leads him leaving halfasses scenes, or cuts into his movies as he doesn't have time or interest to fix them. He just wants stuff get done as he knows he is running on fumes.
>>
>>222877175
Kek, based
>>
>>222877175
He is senile, sometimes he don't remember it's his own movie.
>>
>>222873068
well he bends the knee for the studios. friedkin would of told them to go fuck themselves
>>
>>222870150
Even his lesser films are better than most crap out there.
>>
>>222873068
>zero film writing experience
Lindelof had worked on film scripts before, almost all were notorious bombs. Similar to Kurtzman.
>>
>>222872507
I thought they filmed said sequence and inserted it into the film for theaters that didn't have actors? I haven't watched it though
>>
>>222870150
Directed Alien and Blade Runner. Two movies that are only ''good'' because competent people who are good at making sets and good at designs worked on them.
The problem is that there are directors who are so hands on with movies that it created this illusion that the director is THE GUY who made THE MOVIE.
Hitchcock and Kubrick are responsible for this. Those are directors who get what they want made on the screen. They will either do the work to get the thing they want, or they will find someone who can make it happen.

Ridley Scott isn't like that. Ridley Scott had a team of the best people in the industry who made movies for him. Then those people retired, went to work somewhere else or died. And then you have Ridley Scott left with nothing and his movies suck, they look bad, they sound bad.
No one would be talking about Alien without HR Giger. Without HR Giger he can't make a visually interesting movie.
