Legitimately, why do people keep summoning these dudes? I get there being misinformation that they give you unlimited pleasure or great power or something like that, but once it got out that they actually just fucking torture you to death, you'd think that would be it and no one in their right mind would ever summon them again.
>>
I don't fucking know.
It's a goddamn movie.
>>
>>222877276
If everyone who summons them gets tortured to death, how is that information going to get out?
>>
>>222877813
There are people who didn't summon them who escape knowing that they're torturing the dude that summoned them to death.
>>
>>222877276
um excuse me but it sounds like you need to brush up on your media literary vis a vis transdimensional coomers

Legitimately, you're right: if the Cenobites were widely known as "solve this puzzle and get tortured to death," almost nobody would summon them. The premise works best when you remember that the box is an obscure occult object, not a publicly documented phenomenon.

In the original Hellraiser, Frank doesn't know he's signing up for straightforward torture. He believes the Cenobites can offer sensations beyond anything available to ordinary humans. And in a sense, they can. The crucial problem is that the Cenobites have gone so far beyond normal experience that they no longer distinguish pleasure from pain. What Frank imagines as ultimate hedonism turns out to involve hooks, mutilation, and eternal suffering.

Their famous line, "Demons to some. Angels to others," captures this perfectly: they don't necessarily think of themselves as evil torturers. They're explorers of extreme sensation. The box is essentially an occult promise of transcendence with catastrophically misleading terms and conditions.

Also, even if rumours about the Cenobites existed, that wouldn't necessarily deter everyone. People knowingly pursue drugs, extreme experiences, dangerous occult practices, or self-destructive behaviour. Someone like Frank, who has exhausted conventional pleasures, might think: "Everyone else is too afraid, but I can handle it."

Where your objection becomes much stronger is in the later franchise. Once Hellraiser turned Pinhead and the Cenobites into famous recurring monsters, the mythology became harder to sustain: if everyone knows what happens, why open the box?

Basically, the original concept works because the Cenobites are mysterious and poorly understood. Later sequels often undermine that mystery—and then, yes, you start wondering why anyone would ever touch the fucking thing.

People die constantly because they just love fentanyl so much. The original story was written during peak AIDS crisis by a gay man who surely has friends dying left and right because they couldn't stop fucking strangers. You are presently posting on a bot infested, decade+ past its prime website you know rots your brain. That's why the Hellraiser mythos is do good, it can be anything you're drawn to that you know is bad for you.

The cennobites come after anyone who messes with their cube regardless of the users intention. Basically don't even fucking touch the cube if you don't want to get flayed alive.
>>
>>222877276
Some people thirst for annihilation/transgression
>>
>>222878588
Where did the magic cube come from?
>>
>>222878647
Fuck if I know, my best guess would be ancient egypt or some place like that. The cube seems like something an ancient eastern hermetic cult would come up with.
>>
>>222878647
>what's your pleasure, sir?

They have people (disguised demons) that distribute them for those seeking a fucked up pain/pleasure experience who take the cube willingly. But if someone normal somehow gets their hands on it and summons them, they don't give a fuck, they'll take them as well.

Thats really the problem with the whole franchise, they keep trying to humanize the bdsm angels which just makes them mundane. they cant just be ageless sex freaks who exist outside of our reality, they were actually all human once, some within living memory. the box cant be some inscrutable outsider technology or maybe even the mythological pandoras box that appears to anybody who desperately wants it kinda like a behelit from berserk, it was made by a french guy during the industrial revolution because some rich guy paid him to do it.
>>
>THE BOX, YOU OPENED IT, WE CAME
Isn't "box" a slang for a vagina? Eh I'm probably looking too much into that line

you know, people shit on 4chins, but where else can I say nigger faggot kike without making an account?

You're not. The franchise's entire subtext is specifically about sex and all it's underpinnings like perversion, power, control etc.

I dont believe the Cenobites - excluding the doctor, whom I dont count - ever kill anyone until the third movie.
They rip Frank's body apart, but he is still living through it.
>>
>>222878200
You could count the people who escaped the Cenobites with one hand.
>>
>>222881009
Yeah, you're right, but incidentally the third movie is what ruins the characterisation of the Cenobites, their purpose to the plot, and the rest of the franchise from that point forwards.
They're not sadistic killers. They're alien interdimensional creatures who are so detatched from their former humanity they genuinely believe they are doing humans a service by raping and torturing them for the rest of eternity.
They worked so much better as this neutral prescence who you would rather avoid at all costs, instead of the literal serial killing monster Pinhead later becomes.
>>
>>222877276
There was a comic for Hellraiser that I read like 20 years ago where the explanation was that the Catholic Church deliberately spread the rumor that they gave you awesome powers/pleasures because they figured anyone who would willingly try to summon them would be some kind of satanist or devil worshipper who deserved to get tortured to death anyways, like the whole thing was a big trolling effort from the Pope.
>>
>>222878229
While never straight stated, it very heavily implied in Inferno and it's sequels that Pinhead either got demoted or promoted (your mileage may very on which) by Hell/Leviathan after his encounter with the Princess of Hell; from targeting horny fuckers to collecting souls of the damned like the evil detective in Inferno and Kristy's ex and his cronies/mistress in Hellseeker, who were plotting to murder her.
>>
>>222881760
Agreed. They are there for the foolishly curious. They are all about experience, and pain and suffering - if not more intense than pleasure - are experiences we generally avoid and so know less about.
Thus the main thing they would "help" anyone experience is intense pain and suffering.

Triple dubs.
I hated that when I saw it. Some dude just made it as a commission? Then where did its powers come from? I can't remember if the rich guy did a ritual with it or it just suddenly worked as the Lament Configuration it was that underwhelming.
It's like if they showed us how the Labyrinth was made by some shady New Jersey construction company back in 1917.

always liked Hellraiser but it sorta took on new meaning for me when I realized I get off on receiving pain, well as giving it. I thought I went as far as really enjoying rough sex but it's extended past that. The best fucks I've had involved pain, skin-breaking biting that elicited a full body orgasm, which I didn't even know I could experience. Pain literally unlocked new realms of experience for me. I wouldn't open the box though I'm not that far-gone.
>>
>>222882104
it was the centerpiece for the rich guy’s ritual which imbued it with power

It makes enough sense if you consider that it has magic sigils all over it that are activated upon solving the puzzle.
I liked the idea that there were different boxes that summoned different entities, but they never went anywhere with it.
