Some of these are slated to be out in 4K soon at least

I'd be happy with a blu-ray, even. I hate when something is stuck on DVD and forgotten about.

I just rewatched my favorite kino in preparation for rewatching it again during Horror Month and, darn it, bros. This movie is a masterpiece. This movie is a tour de force and a magnum opus. For the first time in ~100 years, someone had something interesting to say about the last 500 years or so and they said it. We don’t need a sequel. There’s nothing more to say. The call probably came in and they’re going to destroy it. They’re going to ruin my favorite kino, bros. It’s over.

The scene where she goes into the other dimension and that hilarious cronenberg monster chases her down the hallway made me genuinely die laughing, and then when it came back at the end I was crying from sheer amusement. Other than that I thought it was boring and dragged on and then had an underwhelming finish. I’m a huge fan of gore and I thought this would be more of a torture porn movie, but there was only brief flashes of torture and then one decent scene at the end so I was let down a lot by that. The most horrifying part of the movie is the very beginning when you get a close up of the dirtiest fingernails I’ve ever seen in my life, i gagged

Do you think actors ever sign onto a project thinking it's gonna be total shit but it actually ends up surprisingly good, or do you think they mostly go into things with optimism?
Not this girl specifically, it just happens to be the first smile 2 picture got.

Most probably go into it thinking it's a paycheck, or thinking about how it's gonna make them look. I think you have to get pretty big to start turning down scripts.
With horror I imagine people say yes to them because they're ok with the genre. Most actors are just normies so probably don't like gore or adult content past a certain point.

The Autopsy was genuinely one of the best things I saw that year, horror or not, and could've easily been made into a feature length film, it reminded me of some of the best X-Files episodes. David Prior is making a new film based on a book Guillermo del Toro co-wrote, I'm hoping it's as good as The Autopsy.

Just finished. Awful late 80s slasher attempting to introduce another iconic slasher character, but he's just too bad to have caught on. Sidney Snyder was an anti-Vietnam hippie pledging a frat in the 60s when he was killed in a hazing accident. 20 years later during Hell Week he comes back to punish frat boys in the same frat house he died in. The movie is over halfway through before any slasher shenanigans begin, up until then it's all lame/gross pranks on the pledges, some of them uncomfortably homoerotic for my taste (ex. the cherry race, where guys in jock straps have to transfer cherries from one platform to another using their asscheeks and the loser has to eat all the cherries, blugh.) Once the killer shows up the kills are low on gore because of the low budget. Almost all the credited female cast show their tits, which was nice. In the end they can't beat him, he just goes away when he's killed everybody except the one frat boy who was his son. Only watch if you've seen every other slasher out there. The music is by Anthrax, lol.

That disturbed me, even when I was an edgy teenager. But I did find it pretty funny at the same time.

So I just watched Sinister based on the recommendation here. Spoilers ahead,
Overall I thought it was a great horror flick, but not perfect. It was a bit cliche at times, very predictable, and I saw the ending coming as soon as the family was introduced. It was obvious the family was going to be murdered, I just thought it would be the boy doing it and not the girl, since he was the one having all the nightmares and the creepy box scene. Some of the scenes were genuinely spooky like the box scene and the creepy little girl jumpscare right next to his face, but overall it was a bit goofy sometimes and the film really showed its age sometimes with how it was shot and the predictability of some of the scenes, guess maybe I’ve just seen too many horror movies. The tone is the best part, there’s an overwhelming sense of foreboding dread that lingers and grows as the film progresses, you can just feel it suffocating you and it’s obvious it’s not going to be a happy ending from the start. The murders on the videos were so bleak and brutal, and it was a neat twist that all the missing kids were the murderers. The wife was clearly the voice of reason and the main character made many bad decisions, but flawed characters making bad decisions is a staple of the genre I suppose. He should have told the cops about the films as soon as he found them, I was thinking he was going to get blamed for them when he didn’t come forward but that never panned out. Camera work was nice but again, it showed its age, definitely a product of that early 2000s style. Overall I’d give it a 4.5/5, genuinely good, but more to the point, I still don’t think it was as good as undertone. That movie was genuinely innovative and made me think about it long after it finished, though the inspiration is obvious, just with audio recordings rather than film. Undertone has the better twist and it doesn’t rely on genre cliches to get its scares like Sinister
Thanks for the recommendation
>>
It might have been a 5/5 for me if it had more gore, but it was pretty disappointing in that aspect. I wanted to see the little girl actually chop up her family, or at least see the remains, but it cuts away and the gore we do get is very tame. I want to give it a 5, it’s really good, it just lacked some things I wish it had, maybe it was a budget thing. The acting was good and it had some decent scares, but none of the scares were 5/5 material. The best thing it has going for it is the dark atmosphere and the dread, the character slowly losing his sanity and breaking down was well acted.
Maybe I’ll switch it to 5/5 later, but idk

I think it's overrated. It's got a fantastic opening, but that's kind of a cheat because it came to the writer in a nightmare. The stuff he came up consciously was cliche as shit, and he's one of the definitive basedboys

yeah maybe closer to a 4/5 the more I think about it, it was very cliche and predictable, but it was done very well. It’s hard to judge a horror movie until you’ve had time to think about it and I just finished it
>>
>>222937986
>I saw the ending coming as soon as the family was introduced.
to be fair, if you watched it because someone said Undertone ripped it off that's not hard to see coming
>I still don’t think it was as good as undertone
I guess if you haven't seen that many horror films the first ones you see will have a bigger effect. I have not seen a single person say undertone was anything but mid to shite. there's too much demonslop these days is half the problem.

I’ve seen a lot of horror movies and it stood out to me as genuinely creepy, well-shot, unique, and creative. The endings are actually much different, undertone has a more interesting finish that is less cliche and actually makes you think about the movie long after it’s finished since it recontextualizes the whole thing. The main thing it’s inspired by is the premise, not so much the execution. Both movies are about cursed pieces of media and some kind of supernatural entity, but undertone is just more innovative. The way you only ever see the one actress, and you never see outside of the house, it makes it that much more claustrophobic and intimidate, the house really is like a physical manifestation of her inner self, and you don’t know how much of it is actually in her head. They’re both “demonic” movies, but undertone might actually not be based on your interpretation. I think it does the descent into madness better, though obviously both movies dabble in that.
>>
>>222938205
lol
>>
>>222938214
idk what to say other than I disagree on all fronts.
I thought Undertone was boring, overly reliant on long shots of nothing for tension, looked cheap, and has the same "oh I did research and it's a funny named ancient demon" plot the last 1000 horror films have had, and sadly delivered very little of the audio experience it actually had a clear lane to do something with. The long ending shot up the stairs felt like a direct ripoff of Sinister's version down the hallway too, except Sinister had great industrial music.
Sinister is overrated and Baguul is goofy, but Scott Derrickson is a great director just for his Super 8 aesthetic.
>>
>>222938325
I wasn’t bored at all, thought the long shots and the slow pans were really well done and built a lot of suspense, and despite being low budget did a lot with a little. The whole ancient demon thing is played out, but I never said the concept was innovative, it was the execution that was well done. Both sinister and undertone had that ancient demon cliche, but at least with undertone there’s the interpretation that it was just in her head. It seemed like sinister was playing a bit with that but it ended up playing it straight, so it suffers more from that cliche than undertone I think. I here people say that criticism a lot about “doing more with the audio premise” but I’m just not sure what exactly more you were expecting them to do, it’s not about the audio experience itself but the effect it has on the characters and the juxtaposition of the recordings and the shots of the house. It’s supposed to give the impression that what you’re hearing in the recordings is actually happening in the house, or in her head, depending on your interpretation, and they go well together.
Art is subjective I suppose, but I really think you’re just riding the hate bandwagon of what other people thought. I thought it was great and I’ve seen lots and lots of horror movies. I’ve literally watched almost 50 just this year and undertone stood out as one of the best. So few horror movies are actually creepy and undertone had me looking around wondering if the sounds were actually coming from around my house.

Until now, I completely memory holed the fact that there was an American remake of Pulse. That's kind of retarded because yes, there are plenty of American remakes of Japanese horror and other international horror movies. But Pulse is not exactly a conventional horror movie. There are some spooky kabuki moments but it's more subtle and cerebral. I think that's part of why I didn't appreciate it as much as a kid, when I first became obsessed with J-horror.
>>
>>222938875
the American Pulse sequels are kind of interesting, just because they keep the story moving forward and become post-apocalypse movies, lol
