cool how the backrooms were entirely the baggage of the architect guy, the girls was entirely different.

It was pretty cozy, the visuals were great. The lead really acted hisbass off, I think without him, this entire thing would be some B tier movie.
Poolrooms is a neat sequal idea but they really nead a actor as good as that Clark guy

I didn't think they could pull off the premise and make it entertaining but they really did a great job and out of the two big horror movies this year, Backrooms and Obsession I actually enjoyed the ending to this a lot more.

Just like the other backrooms adaptations, the monster kills the movie. It should be focused on exploration and the uncanny nature of the space, NOT about being hunted by monsters

They really leaned on the House of Leaves themes.

-guy with marital problems
-crazy mom backstory
-the Minotaur/monster being a figment of your trauma/unresolved conflicts


But if you never read the book you’d probably ignore these things and think the movie’s plot is a little unfinished.

I think the director read House of Leaves and wanted to do a stealth adaptation since Backrooms is essentially a ripoff of it, but HoL is so thematically dense he could only take a few portions of it and in the end none of it came together as much as it should’ve.


I would love to see Christopher Nolan try to pull off a House of Leaves adaptation.

Which you never see, and it doesn't matter anyway because the most interesting parts, and the vast majority of the book, are about just the exploration (well, and the meta-level mc going insane and cumming and shit). In the backrooms movie, in contrast, the monster gets a lot of screen time and is without question the primary obstacle. If the backrooms movie was just about the nerds in suits exploring the gradually changing room styles (box store, pools, residential houses, etc), and that giant ominous pit, it would have been amazing. Same shit with other stuff too: rendevous with rama's (book) best parts are before the creatures activate, control's (game) best parts are exploring the weird spaces (and the finnish dude), silent hill's (movies, games, etc) best parts are the spooky atmospheres, stalker's (game) and metro (game) best parts are between enemy encounters and anything with darkness and atmosphere

Basically, monsters are normie shit. Real film patricians enjoy uncanny spaces
