it was several factors:>made a fool of himself in court>outwitted by Jimmy>ex wife found out about the condition he's trying to hidethese were the factors that made him wake up and try to forget about his fear of the chimp with a machine gun. he tried to improve and become his old self again, the guy who built up HHM, successful lawyer. This is his only goal, but the malpractice insurance rate going up causes Howard to insist on Chuck's retirement, and he wants him out so badly that he is ready to pay 9 million from his own savings. This devastates Chuck. Now he's the one who is not a lawyer anymore and Jimmy is just suspended for a year. His entire purpose in life has been removed, and he does not have the routine of just starting over from scratch that Jimmy learned early on.After typing it all out, yeah, I agree, it's a one-time incident that shouldn't be perceived as painful as years of constant stings against someone. Anyway, he wishes he had never cared so much about Jimmy, because it would have allowed him to lead a normal life without the condition. I guess that's why he tells this regret as an absolute statement to Jimmy in their last meeting, as some sort of fuck you and trying to reclaim his status.

That's exactly what he did with the mall walker grannies then, and keeping Howard under the belief that the suicide was his fault. In my first watch I thought that Jimmy was just too surprised by Chuck's death, but on rewatches I get the impression that he's supposed to secretly be amazed at how far his evil self can go. Still, as you said, the incident altered him. It's as if Chuck's death was the first real consequence for him. The one thing he can't undo by talking himself out of it. His role model and safety belt gone.
