>Police team is trapped in a zombie filled house, leading to the discovery of a bio-weapon conspiracy by an evil corporation
>Rookie cop and sister of one of the STARs members must escape a city filled with the corporation's experiments and save a young girl along the way, tragically the daughter of one of the corrupt scientists
>In a comedy-of-errors-esque setup as the events of RE2 take place the protagonist of the first entry must also escape the same doomed city.
>6 years later the rookie cop has become a supersoldier and is tasked from saving the presidents daughter from a cult in Spain, meeting old faces along the way.
I don't get it, what is it about the plots of these games that makes them impossible to adapt? They are as straightforward as it gets, there is no Kingdom Hearts/MGS-esque convolution, they couldn't be better suited for film adaptations.
Yet in 27 years we have had over a dozen inaccurate movie and TV adaptations
>>
Legacy studios hate that video games beat yhem in money and entertainment. They dont want any creative direction from them so they buy the rights and do whatever they want.

Just stick to your games and dont watch the movie if you cant stand some creative differences.

> it's not realistic, how did he get a big trench coat?"

He's right. This is the kind of thing terminally online folks/content creators harp about in every kind of movie. They literally pick it apart and dock points due to their fictitious story having fantastical elements.

He's just asking the stupid questions his audience will have and using it as a guide of what not to do.

probably because you insufferable faggots would lambast it even if it was a 1-for-1 remake of RE2 because you already have expectations in your head that the game is "soooO0Ooo goO0dd" & cannot be adapted and would write it of as "cheesy" or "fanservice" like what happened with Silent Hill's movie adaption, or lambast it for being a shitty interpretation like the Milla Jovovich RE movies

what else are directors supposed to do other than try & write a new story in-universe, and yes, that is possible without inserting the words "kennedy" "wesker" "nemesis" "licker" etc. into it

This. A RE adaptation can't be grounded without reworking the dna entirely.

If you don't you end up like the modern Evil Dead. You take away the comedy and Bruce Cambell and it just becomes generic, paint by numbers cabin in the woods shit.

It could only work if it were sincere and leaned into the camp and fantastical, like the new Street Fighter. But Anons are shitting on that too because the fact is, they don't know what they like or want until they see it.

>>223012404
No. I simply don't condemn it without seeing it first. In my mind an adaption requires change in order to work within a new medium. It literally exist in the word meaning for adaptation "to adapt".

I'll never understand why you'd all want to see the same shit with a new skin. It's weird. I mean unless you hate gaming as a storytelling medium, why would you want to see the same story unfold, but this time instead of being in control of the action or character you're essentially watching an actors rendition of a youtube playthrough.

The trailers for that movie do remind me very much of Anderson's RE films in style and tone. It feels straight out of the 2000s in terms of target audience (young men and teenage boys) too which is exactly the right choice. It all very much feels like a video game adaptation.

Cregger's movie seems aimed at a much older, film snobby crowd and it doesn't feel like a video game adaptation at all. It reminds me of Tony Gilroy's Andor where you get the feeling it could be any rando scifi rather than Star Wars.

I'm not arguing, just proving a point. Point being people don't know what they want until you show it to em. Nobody has to ask for it. It will find an audience. And it will do gangbusters regardless of the butthurt few that seek refuge in bitching about it.

It sounds like you want Resident Evil movies with the characters from the games in lead roles. But they don't own those characters. This is not Mortal Kombat. There's no incentive to make an RE movie about Jill when you can make an RE movie about Alice and maybe Jill plays a supporting role in the sequel. This will never change.

Thanatos experiences similar mutations as another prototype Tyrant, the T-002 it was modeled after; specifically elongated limbs, hypertrophic heart, and asymmetrical growth of claws. IIRC both of them were only active for a handful of hours so they didn't have a lot of time to mutate.

>PLAY THE FUCKING GAMES IF YOU WANT THOSE STORIES
Therein lies the problem: Hollywood doesn't seem to understand what Resident Evil is at all, like these Anons said: >>223014249 >>223015359

It's entirely possible to tell a Resident Evil story in a completely different way than expected, some of the games themselves have done this, but film makers just can't divorce themselves from the cookie cutter zombie virus plot. Raccoon City and the zombies were a catastrophic event like Chernobyl or Three Mile Island. They're victims of bioterrorism to be mitigated or dealt with using extreme measures sure, but not the end of the world. It's the executives and bioweapon developers that are the villains of the story. This completely falls apart in an apocalyptic scenario.

In the end it's not some commentary on capitalism or goreslop like Romero films. In fairness it is anti-corporate and heavily critical of Big Pharma, but the corporation is just a vehicle for the true villainy. Some of the bad guys are eugenicists, some of them are ideologues, and even a few of them are just plain greedy assholes; but in the end it's a story about a few good people bringing those villains to justice because of their personal faith in doing what's right. That's what the first two of the older movies did perfectly. Everything after that was a total misconception of what the franchise is about.

>>
>>223017740
Even 7 and 8 cling to themes of victims-made-threats, though to be fair they were both heavily personal stories told from the perspective of one man that was trying to protect his wife/family. The irony was that his wife was one of the villains which the sequel totally forgot because the BSAA let her get off scot-free despite the fact she was a mercenary working directly for a bioweapon distributor.

That seems pretty fair. The US spends 25-40 million dollars on a single ballistic missile. The missile interceptors Israel uses cost 4 million each, and multiple are launched to stop a single missile from Iran, who was launching dozens per day. And the fancy interceptor missiles can cost up to 15 million per missile. Compared to that, a Tyrant costing 120 million is nothing. And you forget that in the Resident Evil universe, most of the world is fighting each other with bioweapons and viruses. There's warlords in South America and Africa that literally use lickers and hunters, or use variants of the T-Virus to wreck havok in cities. A Tyrant can be sent out in an infected city or a warzone filled with bio weapons and will have no issue killing a high value target or completing simple tasks within it. You don't just send it out against a military base or in an open battlefield where it will get droned. Just like how you don't send tanks worth tens of millions of dollars each into a city or areas with dodgy terrain where a random arab with a cheap rpg will destroy them easily by flanking them or a drone will blindside it.
>>
>>223008707
>I don't get it, what is it about the plots of these games that makes them impossible to adapt? They are as straightforward as it gets
That's why.
The games largely have no real plot or characters. A majority of the cast are one note caricatures, and the story is so paper thin that a movie would have to invent 90-95% of it.
I'm not entirely against it, but any adaptation at all would get immediate blowback from the very people it would be trying to appeal to, so it's better to just do something original for the majority who don't give a shit about the plot in the games.
>>
>>223008707
RE would work better as a show than a film, simply because RE is kind of meandering and filled with irrelevant storylines that only become relevant later.
Something like this, each season is a standard 8~ episodes
>RE1
Episode 1 is mostly just setup with Alpha and Bravo Teams investigating, ends with Bravo being selected to lead an investigation.
Episode 2 has Jill being called back into town from LA and has her end up investigating a desolate Machova Village. Adjacent to that is a light adaptation of Chris' prequel novella.
Episode 3 is Bravo's deployment shortly followed (in episode, not universe) by Alpha's.
Episodes 4-8 are a straight adaptation of RE1 with some Bravo guys living a bit longer and Chris entering through a window or side door to remain separated from Jill until the end.
>Season 2
A straight adaptation of RE2. Merge the plot beats of both A/B scenarios, and Episode 1 should have Leon's breakup and Claire leaving college.
Will end on the Leon, Sherry, and Claire Epilogue Files.
>Side Story Seasons 1&2
Side series that adapts smaller stories in the RC outbreak, mainly drawing from Outbreak 1 and 2.
RE3 will be a two episode opener of S1, 4th Survivor will be the closer.
S2 should end with an allusion to ARK I guess.
>Season 3
Straight adaptation of CV.
>Side Stories Season 3
Adaptations of Gun Survivor and Dead Aim.
Ends on a reworked adaptation of Gaiden.
>Season 4
'End of Umbrella' Adaptation. Opens with the destruction of the Russian Facility, followed by all the prior main characters going to take down Spencer, only for Wesker to be there (and for him to 'kill' Jill).
>Side Stories Seasons 4&5
Revelations adaptation for S4.
Operation Javier for S5.
>Season 5
RE4 adapation.
>Side Stories Season 6
Merging of Degeneration and Infinite Darkness.
>Season 6
RE5 adaptation. They could probably soft end it here if it's no longer successful.
>>
>>223022751
>Season 7
Revelations 2 adaptation.
>Season 8
Marhawa Desire and an adaptation of the first half of Chris' RE6.
>Season 9
Damnation and an adaptation of the first half of Leon's RE6.
>Season 10
Jake's RE6 scenario and the rest of RE6.
>Season 11
RE7 adaptation.
>Season 12
RE8 adaptation.
>Side Stories Season 7
Vendetta and Death Island.
>Season 13
RE9 adaptation.

It would take ages, but RE has the benefit of being a game series where the timeline currently spans 30 years. If they releases a season every two years (obviously excluding side stories), the actors would still be in line with the ages of their characters.
But the issue with doing RE is that it would be ridiculously expensive which is likely why nobody wants to do it.
>>
>>223008770
>do whatever they want.
"This is -our- project, it's about our creative vision. It doesn't matter what the fans want."
Rian Johnson

This is the prevailing attitude in Hollywood. See Rings of Power where a bunch of nobody writters with minimal experience are going to "fix" Tolkein's work.
>>
>>223008707
>
The animated films are fine. If anything, they feel too much like a chunk of videogame. They're also canon.
>>
>>223022771
Also, I would consider just straight up rewriting RE to fit a TV show. A lot of connections are there and there is an endpoint, but not one in the games. Were I to rework it it'd probably be
>Season 1: "Nightmare of Arklay" & Season 2: "Nightmare of Raccoon"
Keep everything as is, though drop ARK.
>Side Stories S1
An adaptation of RE Zero.
>Side Stories S2&3
Still Raccoon City stories.
>Season 3: "A Folding Umbrella Part 1"
CV Adaptation.
>Side Stories S4
Survivor adaptation.
>Season 4: "A Folding Umbrella Part 2"
Adaptation of BIO3.5 with Leon, Chris, and Claire as the lead characters.
>Season 5: "Umbrella Legacy"
Post-S4, this is where Leon gets recruited into the government and the BSAA is formed after the Anti-Umbrella Group is dissolved. Completely original bridge story.
>Season 6: "Spencer Rain"
Reimagining of Dead Aim with Albert Wesker as a secondary antagonist and more connections between Morpheus and Marcus (as well as more about Africa).
>Side Stories S5&6&7
Revelations & Operation Javier & Degeneration+Infinite Darkness.
>Season 7: "Lost in Nightmares"
Since Spencer is dead in this timeline, Chris and Jill instead trail Wesker across the country until they return to the Arklay Mansion, just barely outside the quarantine, where LiN kind of happens.
>Season 8: "Nightmare of Kijuju"
RE5 adaptation based on the original story draft.
And the series can just end here.
Just build to this and stop, since going further means locking in for another seven seasons or something.
>>
>>223008707
The vast majority of these adaptations aren't actually trying to adapt anything. They start off as zombie script 11, somebody slaps an IP on it because a consulting group said it would sell.

>>
>>223008707
>I don't get it, what is it about the plots of these games that makes them impossible to adapt?
Because there has never been a director or writer who wanted to do it. They all have their own ideas that they want to hook to the Resident Evil IP because they can't get them funded otherwise.
>>
>>223009428
>for daring to be its own thing
Right, because it's called Resident Evil, not some faggot does his own thing. If some faggot wanted to do his thing, maybe he should go do that. It's also notable that 'do his own thing' near universally means making some derivative slop shit anyways. I can't think of a single time it produced anything worthwhile, it's not like they're diverging from their assignment and turning in kino.
>>
>>223023089
Resident Evil is literally anything Capcom makes and calls Resident Evil. It doesn't even have a real identity anymore. There are no zombies, no Umbrella, nothing that made the original games its own thing.

Of course fans will wonder what has to do with RE, or why it is specifically RC again. Or how it contradicts the idea of the timeline of events that happened as the game series did.

It's such a hypocritical point to just say "Oh fucking hate REfags wanting cameoslop" when the cameoslop they give in the movie is nonsensical and has room for criticism.

His personality and story are also different. Basically his name is the only thing he has in common with the video game chracter.
Also in the first episode, Wesker's daughters are worried because the new place they have to live in is full of white people, which is very suspicious to them. They then cause the outbreak by trying to save the animals because they are vegans. I usually try to finish a show's season even if it's crap but I just couldn't this time

Vidya niggers are scared because they are getting a good movie. And they wont be able to claim that more faithful=better movie. Simple as that.
Want faithfulness? watch God of onions slop.

The games are not adaptable because there are 2 main fanbases of the game. Most of the fans conflicting. For some people re-1-2-3-veronica-7 fans, resident evil is a survival horror game, for 4/5/6 fans, the shit tps trilogy, they are over the top quip/punch action games. I mean, they were always corny, even the survival horror ones, but they werent whedonesque in nature.

So naturally, one of the fanbases will be always angry. Just as they are every time a new RE game is released and its for one base or the other. In a perfect world, they would separate the franchise into revelations vs main numbered, where one is survival horror, the other is joss whedon quipshit. And the worst thing you can do is try to appeal to both. Sure RE9 sold well, but it wont be well remembered since it tried to be both and failed.

RE9 took many plot keys from the anderson saga anyways. I dont see why TPS niggers complain about Anderson movies, since they are practically RE tps games.

This is true but resident evil never had a cohesive theme long before that. The series contains every possible setting and tone that has been in any kind of media in the past 30 years.
Do you like an overcast spanish village where something is very wrong, or do you like arranging laser beams in an african ruin? Is the villain a regular crocodile or zombies with guns or people in trenchcoats doing backflips? All of this is equally resident evil
I think the series is its most special when it is at its most down to earth. People can like the other part, but there have already been 19 terrible adaptations about the secret agent slo mo people aspect of the franchise
>>
Meh, in Japan they never go for accurate, they go for alternate take on the concept. At least they used to do this 15 years ago, I haven't watched any Jap movie/series for a long time. But every medium used the idea and ran with it in a different direction. So a movie, a tv how, an anime, a book and a manga based on the same thing would have been completely different.
You already read the manga, why would you want the same thing a second time in another form?
But with the rise of autism, I wouldn't be surprised they changed their way.

The point is, people aren't interested in seeing the same story again, just in a slightly different way. This is quite different from adapting comics or animations, which are worlds entirely distinct from reality
Resident Evil games are already practically movies, featuring characters portrayed by real actors and based on real life models. It would be simply impossible to surpass the games in the eyes of the fans, therefore, the only interesting approach would be to create an original story within the same universe and expand the lore
If you want to see a Resident Evil movie, just watch a compilation of the cutscenes from one of the games

There's been theories of the m.i.b. being products of interspecies cross breeding or mk ultra experiments with eugenics and mind control. They are the inspiration for the mass produced Tyrant design in RE2. Furthermore the clothing mostly functions as a mutation inhibitor while doubling as barebones camouflage.

Put a typewriter in the background, a green plant in a pot, and bullets in a drawer and its Resident Evil lol

I'm legitimately surprised there's many people that haven't been exposed to UFO conspiracy theory material on /tv/. It's been in so many videogames, shows, and movies.

We already have RE and REmake, why would we need a movie adaptation? Just play the damn games.
>>

>you NEED to make a 1:1 recreation of a story thats already been told and isn't very good or i WILL have a meltdown on 4chan and cry about the lore of a 30 year old video game not being respected!!!!
what causes this mentality? other than being a 40 year old virgin of course

Because the actual events are pants on head retarded.
>>
Everywhere on social media everyone is at
>the games are actually stupid, so nobody should adapt them
>everyone just wants fanservice and they’re stupid teehee
It’s exhausting.
Nobody thinks the new film will be a bad monster movie, everyone is just confused why it’s called resident evil.

Also has anyone else read the script?
“VIDEOGAMES BITCH!!”

The first Paul W.S. Anderson movie was supposed to be some expanded universe type deal, right?

It was never that serious. They moved the timeline a few years. It was just attempting to align broadly with the events of the games.

If I wanted to watch a Resident Evil movie, I'd just rewatch Day of the Dead.

Resident Evil is fucking campy as all hell.
The director is right for not following the main story and even more so for ignoring the Tyrants.
Goofy ass niggers.
