Is this series worth a watch? Or is it rage inducing with hollywoodian misrepresentation of everything
>>223023860Yeah probably. I'm reading Tai-Pan right now and it's awesome.
If you can't name at least two of the three of Japan's great unifiers then this show will be lost on you.
Just watch it. It's not like you have anything else going on in your life.
>>223023860It's great. The white guy absolutely doesn't save the day but is an inconsequential plaything of Jap political machinations like everyone else (though the story is well told mostly from his perspective).I think the show was pretty well received in Japan too.
>>223023860It was a decent watch.Nothing great, but I wasn't bored in the middle of watching.

>>223023860It’s fantastic. It satisfies me on a lot of levels. if you are interested in the time period and aesthetics, and stories with lots of power plays and complex Machiavellian plans with a lot of grounded human elements you will like it. It’s extremely well acted and engaging, and all complaints tend to be nitpicks that are pretty forgivable like some of the language stuff>>223024770 here or a few anachronisms with some of the guns (like some characters having flintlocks instead of matchlocks) but if you’re not autistic that type of stuff shouldn’t disengage you too bad. I’d say it’s the one of the few true 9/10 shows of the last decade and think about it fairly often.

>>223025705Suure it is. And I'm the president of the United States
>>223023860I get that this is based on a book but I just want a samurai series of this quality that doesn't centre around a white guy. Imagine a HBO adaptation of Vagabond.
The topic is interesting, but it should have focused more on the three sides: Japanese, Dutch and Portuguese, who who all had their own goals, and the lead is aligned with the Dutch but as an Englishman not really part of them either. It focused a bit too much on the Japanese's own squabbles, making it feel a bit narrow in scope. If it zoomed out and looked at the colonial wars, although located in Japan, it would feel more like an epic.
>>223025705its a vaugly historical fantasy about a white guy- 2 actually, that were in japan but thats about itthe book is from the 70s and is very deliberately written to be a white mans sensational fantasy, particularly the way it describes the court lifeMusashi is a better book, they should adapt that but theres only japanese in it so.

You will never find any worthwhile analysis of this show on the internet because two people of different races have sex. This is true of all media which depicts such acts, no matter which races are involved or how it is portrayed.
>>223023860Good production value but literally nothing happens
it was a good show. The protagonist is the weakest part of it. And also at times it feels like i'm watching >Weebs Wet Fantasy: The Show
>>223026503The book is interesting, but also a bit weird. It is an almost straight retelling of Tokugawa becoming the shogun, but I assume to avoid any "umm actually this is historically inaccurate" he changes all the names. Though the really frustrating part is it spends 500+ pages building up to the Battle of Sekigahara only to end right before the battle happens.
>>223023890Oda NobunagaTokugawa IeyasuHideyoshi
>>223023875Shogun and Tai-Pan are both very good in their own ways. Dirk is probably the more interesting main character than Blackthorne, but Blackthorne is on the more interesting adventure.

Not common I watch a show that feels over my head in any way.
>>223023860I've already seen the best version of white man goes to japan and cures his inner demons. No need to spoil the concept with an inferior attempt.
>>223028820>nooo not two cakes what causes this mindset
Its a hilarious comedy. The white guy repeatedly has to pretend to be retarded. The japs get all angry and the bad japs get distracted by him. He repeatedly gets the shit beaten out of him while looking on in understandable horror at the savages. At one point some jap hillbilly equivalent accidentally walks in the path of a samurai and just gets his head cut off unceremoniously in front of him. He is completely right about them btw, sure he learns a bit about their culture but he never stops completely at seeing them as weird aliens compared to him. Its a hilarious fish out of water story. Theres a part where hes just blowing Japanese heads off with his fuckhuge hand cannon guns and clubbing little ninjas to death with them while the japs are all bothered he treats his weapons like tools. Awesome show, also he fucks.
>>223023860Its mid. But not bad if you got nothing else
>>223023860im watching it, finished episode 4. i like it. it feels like an isekai anime. the lead characters are all good, the main english guy is funny. the costumes and props are good. the biggest concern i have seen so far is woman fight and killing like men, like one female character killed like 5 background jobber soldiers
its just another bong media trying to steal the achievements of their superior iberian counterparts.
>>223029253what are you talking about? This is based on a book from the 70s.
Why didn't they just make the show from Toranaga's PoV or something? It was weird when they tried to shoehorn the white guy into situations
>>223029300Yes, a fucking book, like the real history that happened in Japan in that period was not interesting enough, so they had to shoehorn the bongs in Japan when they had no relation whatsoever with them.

>>223023860Idk I only saw the original. The 1980 version is a fucking masterpiece though go watch that instead.
>>223029711the dutch role in Japan was very pragmatic, they just wanted to do business so they never mingled with japanese affair or tried to convert them. They knew what happened to the portuguese there and knew how to keep a low profile and just do the trading,Thats why despite all that portuguese had a much larger impact on japanese culture and the dutch, despite trading with them for centuries, barelly left any impact in Japan.

Before the world went turbo sjw ID & faux-nationalist politics, they would've been happy just to be included and shown to western audiences.
>>223023860>Is this series worth a watch?Yeah, even though the book is over 1000 pages and they cut most of it out, as well as needlessly changing stuff.>>223023875>I'm reading Tai-Pan right now and it's awesome. It's Clavell's best novel and Hollywood will probably adapt it again, though they'll probably fuck that up also.

>>223023914>The white guy absolutely doesn't save the day but is an inconsequential plaything of Jap political machinationsNonsense, Anjin-san is critically important to how events play out, in fact without him, Toranaga would have lost. But the show replaced that grrl powah!
>>223026553it's an alternate history (all Clavell's books are) but the genre wasn't "codified" like it is nowadays and he didn't think of the novel that way, it was just fictionalized history for him.As for Sekigahara, if you have even a modicum of historical knowledge, you know what happened there.
>>223034189noble house is such a guilty pleasure. so many parts of that book are just bad and I don't care because I just love hanging out with all those characters. I tried to watch the miniseries a few years back, only take away is now I picture Dunross as the architect and imagine him bulking up his wife between scenes. that little extra lora adds a lot.

>>223034157man I actually read Gai-Jin a few years back and I'm still hurting. The dude could still write but clearly lost the ability to plot out a story and identify what is interesting. It is so sad that he couldn't finish what should have been his opus.
>>223034372>As for Sekigahara, if you have even a modicum of historical knowledge, you know what happened there.I just hit Sekigahara in Dou Suru, Ieyasu? I'm hoping they capture the scale, but I'm not sure NHK ponied up for that in a taiga series.

>>223029822>The 1980 version is a fucking masterpiece though go watch that instead.Great mini-series and it follows the book more closely but I suspect for most nowadays, it'll appear dated.
The novel is about a master manipulator 4d chessing himself to the top of the country, as part of that he's manipulating the white guy into being his best friend for life, and we see this mostly from the perspective of the white guy. The tv show completely misses the point. It actively muddies the point by trying to take the white guy down a few pegs. The friendship really isn't there at all. The show's so terrified of white savior accusations it both never let's the white guy be particularly useful or even friendly.
the show runners are a white male/half-white half-japanese female couple. it was filmed in 2021 in Canada with all the staffs wearing masks.like everyone else is saying, the first couple episodes are the best.Anjin becomes a side character after that because the showrunners and writers had to put the japs on the pedestal. the showrunners said in an interview that they cast cosmo jarvis as Anjin instead of going with blonde hair blue eyed guy because, and i'm paraphrasing this but they didn't want the white guy to look sleek and proper. they wanted him to almost look like a bumbling big buffoon surrounded by stoic, dainty japs.
>>223034547The colors may confuse the modern viewer's eyes.
>>223033905>Why do (some) japs (and Aznidentity/Ricecels) get butthurt about a fictional western seriesBecause they are actually more Westernized then normal Asians and thus have adopted retarded Western woketardation.

>>223034189>Noble House was my personal favorite of them.Tai-Pan > Shogun > Noble House > Gai-Jin > WhirlwindI'm not including King Rat as it's a fictionalized autobiography and doesn't really fit the series.>>223034463>I actually read Gai-Jin a few yearsIt's a great story but there is no "Main Hero" like Anjin-san in Shogun, Dirk Struan in Tai-Pan and Ian Dunross in Noble House for the reader to identify with. Whirlwind suffers the same problem.
>>223034626>>look like a bumbling big buffoon surrounded by stoic, dainty japs.>I mean, that pretty accurately describes blackthorne in the bookIn the book and first adaption, he starts out that way but quickly goes full Ken-sama. In the new adaption, he remains mostly a dumbass throughout who is just carried by events around him.
>>223025145I have an even nitpickier complaint about the guns:In the first episode you see some ashigaru running while holding thier matchlocks in the style of modern rifles (low ready, with the barrel angled down) which would 100% cause the shot to fall out of the barrel of any muzzle loading weapon. This really bugs me because the image of a soldier marching with his gun in the traditional (resting against the shoulder with the muzzle pointing straight up) position is so culturally ingrained that modern armies using modern breech loading weapons still do it to this very day while on parade, centuries after it became unnecessaryAmazing show 9.99/10

If anyone remembers the Portuguese interpreter who reconciles with Blackthorne at the end, I was surprised to find out he stars in a Japanese morning drama where he plays a foreigner who lives in Japan in the 1800s and has a Japanese wife. The story is about the two of them bonding despite the language barrier, through shared love of Japanese culture and ghost stories. I managed to catch a few episodes of it when I was there a few months ago. It was pretty good.

It was genuinely awful to watch through weekly release. The lead actor looks like a saudi prince in whiteface, it's a baffling casting choice made even worse by his horrific acting. I could forgive the distracting googly eye contact lenses if he knocked it out of the park but he was laughably bad and his character was inconsequential.I felt that the series was a hate letter to the original as well as the "white saviour complex" in general. The politics of the show were dull and it meanders in circles, trying to prove some philosophical point with it's female characters that doesn't really get anywhere. The intended waifu becomes so obnoxious that it is funny when she sudokus. The setting is underutilied, the show does that ugly fisheye cam thing and the final scene directly spits in the viewers face, declaring nothing mattered and the show is 2smrt4uThis board was botted with shills when it was on, posting from memory
>>223039922god I love reading these schizo midwit rants, I can only imagine how unstable and freakish you are irl
>>223034228He's critical but he has zero agency, just a bargaining chip. None of Anjin's own actions have any real effect.Only things he does himself is provide advanced cannons (made meaningless by the earthquake) and help the Japanese ship sail deep water during a storm.

>>223039531I used to read books.I read all the Harry Potter books when I was 10. I stayed up all night and finished Deathly Hallows in 5 days or something. >>223040013>>223039922It was such an uncompelling show to watch for this reason. Toranaga doesn't do anything the entire show and really just uses bureaucracy and customs to let his enemies trip over themselves. It's almost laughable how much whatever he says or his enemies do doesn't matter. He is basically waiting out the clock till the regents eat themselves. It is by far the most strategically smart thing, of course. It exploits the rules and traditions of the time but it makes the show such a boring watch because then you're just sitting there for the acting. You get an inconsequential plot about a white guy thinking he is making a difference, and another about how if it wasn't for a woman Toranaga wouldn't be where he's at.
I think Japanese girls are cute

He has all these catastrophes, betrayals etc happen and they each look like they could doom him but he never actually planned to use them, just to think that he'll always have the capablility of being an unbeatable threat if they let him go unchecked. It's a big theme of the series that the complicated customs around honor are a giant beurocratic mess with overly harsh punishments for transgression, even if you're forced into them. It's in keeping with the theme of the series for this to be the way he wins rather than winning on the battlefield. All he needed to do was to force his enemy into making those disguised house arrests. After that he just needed to survive long enough to be prove it wasn't a temporary restriction for their own safety and that they were being imprisoned.
