You know who doesn't like a good poop joke? Netflix. In this episode there's a line said by Choi Dong-hyeon about Dong-man:개가 똥을 끊지literally"a dog will never stop eating shit"Korean idioms are laced with all kinds of poop and dog references, and one of the interesting things about watching kdramas is learning how another culture expresses themselves though sayings and idioms. Let's take a look at another example from the show 'A Hundred Memories'.The scene of Young-rye visiting her mom's restaurant, they're busy and her mom says:Korean내가 간밤에 똥꿈 꿨더니단체 손님만 세 테이블이야literally"I dreamed about poop last night,and now we’ve got three tables of group customers."Viki"Hey, I dreamed of poop last night.No wonder we've got three big parties today."VIU"I must've had a lucky dream.We've had three big parties already."Viki preserves the poop flavor, it's completely removed in the VIU subtitles. Normally you don't want poop flavor but this is one of the rare exceptions. Maybe a more natural flowing translation would be "I had a lucky poop dream last night, and look, three big parties today!"Now back to the We Are All Trying Here line. How does Netflix translate it?"I'll believe it when pigs fly."BORING. And it doesn't even really capture the meaning in my opinion. It's more a statement about how Dong-man is not going to or can't change his ways. Something like "Yeah, and dogs will stop eating shit," or "A dog will stop eating shit when pigs fly" if you want to keep the helpful English reference for viewers.
