I went down a bit of a rabbit hole after watching Southland Tales and being amazed at how bad it was and it was hilarious to see Richard Kelly giving interviews where he was talking about how he's still been working on Southland Tales through all these years of doing nothing. Also his 800 page Donnie Darko novel is probably AI-generated nonsense he paid someone to generate for him. The guy is always publicly saying he has this incredible work ethic and working on all these projects but everything he's put out since Darko is kind of a joke. The Box isn't even terrible like Southland Tales, it's just really unremarkable and what you would expect to get if you asked AI to generate a peak Redbox core Twilight Zone episode drawn out to be a movie.

I watched Donnie Darko as a teen but not the Cannes version, witch I just watched recently and it DOES add a shitton to the depth of the whole thing. I rewatched it as a grown ass man 7 times in a row, because I kept finding things that I missed and the more I watched it the more fucking depressing the -- what I think true reading -- of the movie becomes.

Like, if you actually bother to read the added texts from Grandma Death's notes, it becomes apparent that EVERYBODY is conspiring against Donnie, for he is a literal sacrificial animal for the entire human race whose willing death can only save us.

His parents want him dead. They keep rewarding him for every bunny-influenced misdeed, driving him further into insanity.

His fucking psychiatrist manipulates him during hypnosis, basically telling him that he HAS to sacrifice him, otherwise the world collapses into a dark hole and he'll live on alone in a tormented existence.

His "score" with his "gf" is actually a trap that ensures that he will sacrifice himself so she may live yet again.

At the very beginning of the movie, and I shit you not, there's a scene in the hotel where the dad talks about how glad their son didn't dieded, and the mom, with a smile on her face shakes her head, lovingly. They "know" unconsciously that he has to die.

As soon as the parallel universe thing activates the entire city becomes a scheming manipulative mob with a singular goal: to sacrifice Donnie so they may live.

At the very end to his letter to Grandma Death, Donnie basically says that he'll rather the world and then his life, and he can't wait for his lonesome existence without them. But oopsie, he wrote the letter to Grandma BEFORE the trap was set, and pussy has big consequences.

If you believed for a second that a single person genuinely cared for him you've fell down the wrong rabbit hole.

The best case scenario is that it will be mid. Donnie Darko is an example of outside restraints imposed on a creator resulting in the end product being better. Everyone always talks the negative side of studio meddling, without realizing they're simply parroting egotistical creators, but the reality is there's another side of the coin where outside input stopped a creator from going up their own ass and producing diarrhea. True Detective is also an illustrative example of this phenomenon--input from multiple sources subdued the masturbatory vision of the main creator and thereby produced something that wasn't so far up its own ass it ended up being alienating and cringe.
