Boring movies.
The horror lies exactly in the same dimension to the movie as a fan theory.
It's just overly thinking about the movie that may be scary.
The movies themselves are just boring nonsense.

I'm pretty sure the horror in hereditary lies in the satanists and the freaky stuff that they make happen and in midsommar lies in the pagan cultists tha practice human sacrifice, not at all different from rosemary's baby and the wicker man which are horror classica
do you consider those too boring nonsense?

there's virtually no metaphor in hereditary

there's alot of whatever dramatic tool it was that made "signs" cool when that was new - fate, god, demons, forces beyond mere human willpower - conducting humans like puppets to their own end, preparing an entire persons' or familys' life from birth to death to fulfil some obscure goal (3 generations of the family in hereditary were attuned to the paimon worship stuff, with the sole end of performing the ritual events in the last 30 minutes of the movie)

but none of it is really indirectly referenced or metaphorical, it's all pretty direct, visible, tangible to the viewer. it's just hints and oddly coincidental things that eventually culminate in that moment of realization that none of the people in the film have ever truly had free will and this was the fate they were condemned to likely 2+ generations prior when the grandmother put the movie's finale ritual in motion.

I just think the average horror fan has really shitty tastes and their idea of what horror should be about is the equivalent of drinking a cup of coffee or masturbating to porn, just instant gratification, they might be even dumber than action fans. Classic horror stories from 50+ years ago understood it's all about the characters and suspense not a high body count and tons of jumpscares or extreme graphic violence like the younger generations grew up with and got desensitized to.

This isn't even exclusive to horror either sadly, classic action movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark that blew people's minds 40 years ago with its practical stunts seem tame and boring now to moderm audiences that are so used to CGI and over-the-top action in Avengers and Fast & Furious 9 with that ridiculous car bridge rope swinging scene. At least action fans still understand that a movie like Dr. No still counts as an action movie.

>>223063645
>what horror should be about is the equivalent of drinking a cup of coffee or masturbating to porn, just instant gratification
Unironically yes, and this is a good thing. The objective of a horror movie is to make you feel horror. It is supposed to be exciting and the movie fails or succeeds on the strength of that, like how a comedy is supposed to be funny.

Jumpscares can be scary, but a movie that's basically just a screamer compilation isn't particularly good horror. Extreme graphic gore and body horror shit can be scary, but a movie that's just goreporn isn't particularly scary except to a singularly squeamish kind of person (who probably wouldn't enjoy the movie anyway). If people are dying gruesomely every 5 minutes it just becomes predictable and oversaturated.

Elevator horror takes this way too far in the opposite direction to the point many of them are horror movies in name only. Imo the best example of this is The Witch. There is absolute zero actually horrifying content. It's just a very, very slow paced period drama about 16th century new England - but Satan shows up off screen at the end. There is no actual horror in it, unless you find the themes about isolation and patriarchy and paranoia particularly unsettling. In which case many period dramas would be very unsettling for you.

Horror (like porn, or a cup of coffee), needs to be understood on its own terms. Horror fans already know what they want to see. But movie critics have a hard time translating what they think good cinema means to this. Which is why they will dickride movies like the Witch or hate on movies that later turn out to be classics, like The Thing.

I have no doubt Obsession is going to be canonised because its one of those rare horror movies that horror fans like and that has topical enough social/psychological themes that immediately legitimise it to mainstream critics.

Grow up faggot, they're a production company that makes movies (You) personally don't like. Get over it.
They've been successful because they've stuck to an older studio model. Scout film festivals for movies that cost nothing from literal who's, scoop them up, give them a few million dollars in marketing, and release them into the wild. They don't have to make 500 million dollars to break even, and if one does well its financed them for the next 10 years.

>The objective of a horror movie is to make you feel horror.
Nobody said it wasn’t, you're just completely missing the part about instant gratification where retarded horror fans will literally mentally count the amount of jumpscares and kills a movie has, the minutes between each one and will piss and shit and moan if there are 27 jumpscares/kills rather than 28 or if they don’t happen literally every 5 minutes because they need constant stimulation like they all have ADHD so the comparison to porn and coffee here was not a positive implication in this context. Suspense is in essence about the fear of the unknown, doesn't get any more horror than that but this is completely lost on the average modern horror fan.
>There is no actual horror in it
Did you actually watch it? The VVitch starts with a newborn infant being kidnapped by an old naked lady living in the woods who grinds it up and turns it into baby mush that she then smears all over herself to become young again. The rest of the movie is about the escalating tension and gradual unravelling of the sanity of the rest of the family who are dealing with loss caused by an unknown threat, living isolated and cut off from the rest of society so thus were all doomed to their fate from the start. It's full of the kind of dread that gets under your skin and stays there after the credits roll, basically the textbook definition of suspenseful psychological horror so there are no monster chases or anything like that to be found here if you went in expecting that like I’m sure many horror fans did judging by some of the reviews and scores it got on sites like Letterboxd.

I do find it funny that you bring up the movie’s sense of isolation and paranoia like those are totally separate things from horror but then you immediately compare it to The Thing in the context of classic horror movies.
>Horror fans already know what they want to see.
Prey tell us what exactly that is then?

This is the thing, I accept your comparisons to porn and coffee and I don't see it as a bad thing because the job of a horror movie is not to make me feel smart, it's to make me feel scared. This is the criticism I make of critics versus horror movies, half the time they don't know how to watch horror movies or analyse them on their own merits. It is like watching porn and coming away giving it a 2/10 because of it's not a normal movie, it's just completely missing the point of the pornography. What makes a 10/10 porno is not what makes a 10/10 movie and neither is what makes a 10/10 horror movie.

To the end of making you feel horror, a jumpscare is a tool. So is gore, so is death, so is suspense, so is the unknown and the unseen. All of these are tools available for the director to be used, and all of them can be used well. Just like how an erotic filmmaker had a multitude of tools available, including suspense for that matter, a good porno will make great use of suspense and the unseen.

The problem with elevator horror, like The Witch for example, is that it's all tease no cumshot. Not all elevator horror is made equal but in its case the resolution to the suspense is not horrific, it's thematic. If the kind of themes the Witch works with leave you with a lasting sense of dread then you would probably also find another period piece like Women Talking scary (I'm aware that movie is a meme on /tv/ but I am unironic about that comparison)

Suspense is only suspenseful when it actually goes somewhere, when the build up has resolution, and in horror that resolution must be horrific. This is the problem with constant jumpscare movies. A jumpscare is itself a vehicle for suspense, it's payoff to build up, and it sets you on edge in anticipation of the next one. Oversaturating a movie with then ruins the suspense, but that does not mean the tool itself is the problem.

>the job of a horror movie is not to make me feel smart
And there in lies the issue, you think movies need to be dumb and full of excess because that’s the only way for you to feel emotions which is a personal issue. You’re so far up your own ass you probably don’t even realize that there are people who find The VVitch horrific but feel nothing for your Terrifier or whatever else you deem a good example of horror except maybe laughter. What is scary/creepy/unsettling, what is funny, is in the eyes of the beholder, but The VVitch isn’t trying to be a historical drama with minor horror elements like you’re implying, you didn’t even remember the first 10 minutes of the movie either if you even saw it at all which it doesn’t sound like you did, even just scrolling through the RT reviews briefly most seem to understand that and gives it good scores for that reason.
>half the time they don't know how to watch horror movies or analyse them on their own merits
Slasher movies have never been particularly well liked by critics or audiences actually because they’re usually just bad, lazy and uninspired hence Michael, Jason, Freddy, Chucky, Ghostface et al. getting a trillion sequels. Even in your cherrypicked comparison, The VVitch has a higher average rating on every user driven review aggregator site like IMDB, Letterboxd etc. with many more user ratings. Even on RT Terrifier has less than half the amount of critic reviews as VVitch and 10x less user scores because post-2019 it only counts verified ratings which require purchasing tickets through Fandango narrowing it even further down to only Americans being able to give scores. If you’re somehow implying that the Terrifier movies are what you think constitutes as “true” horror then you’re just proving my point. Slashers didn’t exist back in the eras of Poe or Lovecraft and neither did that type of excessive graphic violence that we’re so used to today or jump scares for that matter.
>>
>>223067948
What the average horror fan thinks horror is about stems from growing up with what the genre largely became about starting in the 80s and only concerning American horror. J-horror and K-horror for instance have pretty much always been “slow burn atmospheric jumpscare and gore free elevated horror” with few exceptions like Guinea Pig. The VVitch and others like it is just going back to classical horror before it became about pornographic violence.
>a good porno will make great use of suspense and the unseen.
Suspense doesn’t just mean anticipation in this context, it refers to a very specific narrative tool used in cinema and literature of which two primary genres sprang from: horror and thriller. If a porn tries to have an elaborate story like what you’re describing then it's longer just porn, but porn + other genre, like Pirates (2005) and that probably includes clit lit that’s basically just romance novels with explicit sex scenes in them. Pornography started with people taking pictures of naked women with cameras in the 1800s, they can only have very little plot before it stops being purely porn because it’s simply not inherent to the purpose of the genre. Horror as a genre started with the written word and thus has always been inherently story and character driven like every other literary/cinematic genre. Horror fans don’t know, don’t care about or don’t understand these differences so they keep thinking Terrifier represents the entire genre, not just one very specific sub-genre that actually does demand a certain kill count to qualify as.
>but in its case the resolution to the suspense is not horrific, it's thematic.
These are not mutually exclusive. If you think a young teenage girl losing her entire family and then ending up joining the evil forces responsible for their deaths by signing a Faustian bargain with the literal devil isn’t horrific and is actually just some feminist power fantasy then you have a pretty skewed perspective on things.

>If the kind of themes the Witch works with leave you with a lasting sense of dread
They can given the right context/presentation, that’s generally how genres work. You yourself brought up The Thing, which I noticed you either conveniently ignored or just didn’t pick up on the contradiction a second time, which shares the same two core themes of VVitch. There are retards out there who will unironically claim The Thing isn’t a horror and it’s because they think exactly like what you’ve illustrated perfectly so far, so they don’t understand the primary mechanisms that drives the film’s horror is equal parts suspense, paranoia and isolation, the monster itself is just another piece of the puzzle, not the sole piece. What do you think the whole mascot horror trend is about for example? It’s about taking innocuous iconography meant for young children and changing their presentation to turn them from cute and lovable and funny into monsters to be feared.
>(I'm aware that movie is a meme on /tv/ but I am unironic about that comparison)
Yeah, I know that strawman comparison probably makes sense to you given how you didn't actually watch the movie you're poorly trying to analyze.
>when the build up has resolution, and in horror that resolution must be horrific.
But it doesn't need to be constant, nor does every resolution need to be horrific, otherwise we wouldn't have final girls and every horror movie ever made would have everyone dying at the end which is just pure nihilism. One of the most famous Gothic horror stories ever made which has had countless film adaptations made almost all of which are horror too, Dracula, always ends with Dracula’s death and Van Helsing and Jonathan Harker’s survival, even his fiancé Mina survives unless it’s the Nosferatu version of the story.

That isn't Cameron at all though. He's a cocky arrogant prick, but I think his filmography over the years has proven that he's justified in being a cocky arrogant prick.
I don't think any of his movies approach Shakespearean levels of drama, but he knows spectacle and and how to craft technically impressive films that has driven forward special effects technology.
He's just not the kind of guy who suffers fools, or wants to bullshit.

Cameron, Carpenter, Spielberg, and even Scott have every right to sit on their laurels and be dumb obnoxious assholes. Maybe if the successive generations of directors captured 1/10 of what they did theyd need to shut up but theyre all entitled to yell at clouds.

Just look at Alien as proof when Scott and Cameron took it they made 2 movies that completely changed movies forever. Everyone almost mindlessly chases the feeling from those movies for literal fucking decades. You can see their influence in movies now. Alien is 50 years old and Aliens is 40 years old and people still chase after those movies. You can add George to this list as well he can make stupid movies until hes dead or nothing. At the end of the day even a century from now people will mindlessly hunt for the same feeling they got watching his movies. What they accomplished was genuinely historical.

I'm not particularly fond of Terrifier, but I contrast it to the Witch because it is completely opposite to everything elevator horror is about and it's a typical example of the kind of horror move you are (negatively) describing. Yet, there's a lot of horror fans who really like it and it manages to be less divisive with audiences than The Witch.

Your allusions to gothic literature are interesting because what works on the page doesn't necessarily work on screen and things are possible on screen that are not possible on the page. Metamorphosis for example, is unsettling as fuck, but it wouldn't be possible for a director to put the surreal horror of Gregor's inner life onto the screen. What works as literature here wouldn't work as a screenplay because so little of it is visual.

In the same way, you can't have a jumpscare in literature, it just does not work. It's something that's unique to cinema as a visual medium and for the director with the goal of scaring you it is an excellent tool to use. Psycho, for example, is a wonderful movie for how it manages suspense and follows through with resolution - and in Psycho jump scares are a well used tool for resolution.

When I say "resolution" I'm not talking about the ending, I'm talking about the payoff to the suspense. It's the same as in porn, or music, where anticipation builds until it is answered with resolution. It can be the dread and suspense of waiting to see Mrs. Bates face. It can be the long drum roll on Solo Dancer by Mingus before the bass trombones come in and the bass/drums go nuts. It can be long shots of a sexy woman just doing stuff before any actual nudity or sex happens.

Psycho, is really good at this. Suspense is always answered ultimately with resolution, and in Psycho the fright from that sets you on edge to make the next round of suspense even more powerful.

When I say something like The Witch is all tease no cumshot, that's what I am talking about.

>it's a typical example of the kind of horror move you are (negatively) describing.
Believe it or not I actually do like and consider more than a few slashers great horror movies like Black Christmas, Halloween, Scream, TCM, ANoES, several giallos, but the sub-genre is full of mostly trash and the box office also reflects that sentiment because there are now several horror movies that have grossed over $300 million+ none of which are slashers. Those Twisted Childhood PD movies were designed as slashers for a reason because next to found footage they’re the easiest/cheapest type of horrors to make.
>Yet, there's a lot of horror fans who really like it and it manages to be less divisive with audiences than The Witch.
Not if this board is anything to go by, but yes, The VVitch might be more divisive given it probably has a much larger audience than Terrifier and like I said a lot of horror fans are retarded and have dogshit tastes and don't understand the genre they pretend to be into as well as they think they do so their expectations are often skewed, which naturally hurts their perception of movies that try to be a little deeper than a puddle with less of that excess and instant gratification they're so used to.
>What works as literature here wouldn't work as a screenplay because so little of it is visual.
The modern horror film, including the slasher, stems from the 70s, but the 80s is when the MPAA started gradually becoming more lax and horror started becoming full of excess: excessive amounts of sequels, violence, jump scares etc. which all culminated with all those ultra violent/jumpscare heavy Saws, Hostels, Paranormal Activities and Platinum Dune remakes from Hollywood in the 2000s, by far the worst decade for American horror in cinematic history so far. Silent horrors, Universal Monsters, Hammer Horror, those were all closer in tone and style to Gothic horror literature than the modern horror film.

>Psycho, for example, is a wonderful movie for how it manages suspense and follows through with resolution
Then I don't even understand what we're even arguing about here, because there are only three scenes with traditional payoffs in that entire movie, four if you also count the creepy final shot of Norman speaking in his mother's voice into the camera which I do. Psycho is actually another great example of a classic suspenseful horror movie that certain dumbass horror fans now think doesn't qualify as horror because they keep comparing it to modern slasher movies with gore and high body counts including its own sequels when the original was much more psychological with only a couple of slasher style kills, and yet it shocked and horrified audiences back in 1960 all the same.
>When I say something like The Witch is all tease no cumshot
The VVitch does have resolutions, they're just few and far between like Psycho and many other classic horrors. The baby getting turned into paste, the little brother getting poisoned by the witch after getting lost in the woods, the mother having her nipples pecked at by a bird that she thinks is her dead baby come back to life, all the goats getting killed, the father getting stabbed in the stomach by the goat's horns, the twins suddenly disappearing after stumbling upon the witch in the stable, the eldest daugher being forced to kill her own mother who thinks she's the witch who caused all their pain and suffering and then tries to murder her, finally culminating with the ending. Most of these occur in the last 20 or so minutes, but there are definitely payoffs for all the built up tension/suspense.

The core of my argument is that for a director jumpscares are a good and valid tool to use. That's why I mention Psycho, because what it is doing in scenes like the attached are jump scares, with the soundtrack cues, fast editing and all. There are exactly 3 jump scares, the shower scene (halfway), the staircase scene (2/3rds) and the chair scene (near the end). That's a good distribution, because these are only as impactful as the suspense that builds up to them. The jump complements the suspense.

When suspense is building, you are waiting for something to happen. What Psycho is doing is cyclical, the atmosphere of the movie builds suspense, then that resolves violently, and your senses are heightened for the next cycle.

I mentioned Obsession earlier but it's relevant here, what Obsession does well is capture the feeling of walking on eggshells. No one dies until the movie is already almost over. But there are many scares, it starts with very minor ones, until you get to the bed scene about half way through, that's the resolution to the opening suspense cycle. From then on, it feels like walking on egg shells, and each subsequent suspense cycle, shorter and shorter, is stronger than the last.

Elevator horror is defined by how it rejects a lot of the classic audio-visual vocabulary of horror and instead tries to emulate what critics would consider serious cinema. But, imo, this does not make the movies better, it makes them less horrific. Suspense is better when its cyclical rather than the entire movie itself being one long build to the resolution. The idea is the assumption that a longer cycle = more time = more suspense but that's not particularly effective compared to the traditional model.

And the horror industry does seem to have gravitated that way, you don't really have the same interest in these types of movies as you had in the late 2010s, in the same way other things like slashers or torture porn were once in fashion until they were not.

Yeah Skinamarink was all atmosphere and vibes, it doesn't surprise me at all the concept started from the creators youtube shorts about dreams because it does watch like a series of vignettes.
Tho imo the basement scene was scary as fuck, way scarier than anything in The Witch. The whole movie was basically throwing shit at the wall but for about 10 minutes it actually worked.
