The main thing they fucked up with the remake is making the father in the basement overtly racist when in the original he was actually right the entire time and that was part of the point. Ben is a much more compelling character in the original because he ends up being wrong and the antagonist had a better plan than him.

Something always felt off about the shooting of the tail-light zombie, how he's basically killed off screen and whatnot. I come to find out years later this film had a ton of trouble with the MPAA and had a lot of it's gore cut. You can see some in the deleted footage on YouTube.
