At some point he stands up and he says to me, he has "I'm sorry kid but I'm going to get some more punch, this gabbing is leaving me mightily thirsty". He didn't look like he was particularly thirsty, so I asked him why he had to go right now and couldn't finish his story. He looks at me and says "look kid, sometime there is just no punch line".

Norm's laughter never looked happy to me. It was always a kind of mocking laughter, not necessarily at who he was conversing with but just at the entirety of the situation. He always looked like he alone was aware the whole of existence was one miserable cosmic joke played at all our expense and he only laughed at the futility of it all. It's really kind of depressing and pessimistic and I'm not sure I could really be friends with someone like that.
