>>223122934Russians were institutionally stupid because they just didn't really think that such severe consequences were actually possible.Dyatlov was actually pretty well liked, there was no real pressure from upper management to do the test either, they just wanted to do it.The series clamours about Soviets lying but it unironically shows the official side of the story - "it was operator error, there was a highly specific design quirk of the reactor but it would never have been relevant if not for the operators fucking it up".Did the crew fuck it up? In modern sense, yeah, they should have stopped hours before the test even was set to occur, but at the time Chernobyl hasn't happened yet so everyone was playing a bit fast and loose with nuclear energy thinking it'll be fine.Truth is we needed Chernobyl so retards would stop doing nuclear criticality incidents and yet they still happen all the time, but at least the big shit is treated with due reverence (for now). It's not even only Russian retards, Three Mile Island was caused, among other things, by a guy who was so fat his belly blocked view of warning lights and they managed to melt down half the reactor before anyone even noticed anything weird happening an hour and a shift change later. The only reason it didn't end in a Chernobyl open core situation was that they got lucky and the hydrogen bubble never ignited. Also, it's enterietly possible Chernobyl only happened because the rods shape was changed as a safety measure after partial meltdown in Leningrad.
>>223123876>Three Mile Island was caused, among other things, by a guy who was so fat his belly blocked view of warning lights I wish I was joking btw.

Ten years ago you wouldn't blink twice.Either way, even if you want to kvetch, you should be happy - RBMK was Russian design, Dyatlov was Russian, Akimov was Russian, Brukhanov was a fucking Kirghistani or an Uzbek or something. I think the only relevant guy that was "Ukrainian" was Toptunov and even in the HBO series he's portrayed positively, though he did press the fucking button.

IT'S OVER 9000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
>>223123876>>223123896I think three mile island had more to do with them all being naval reactor operators they didn't bother to retrain than the dude's gut. If he knew what he actually needed to pay attention to he would have gotten his paunch out of the way. The things you're supposed to worry about on a small ship reactor are completely the opposite of what you need to worry about on a huge power grid reactor. They were scared of the reactor exploding like a radioactive pipe bomb from coolant pressure spikes, but a large power reactor is contained in a pressure vessel that makes a deep sea submersible look like a tin can. Conversely, they weren't worried at all about draining the coolant to lower the pressure because they weren't even thinking about the decay heat which in a tiny reactor is a negligible factor but it was more than enough to melt that big one when it wasn't being cooled properly.
>>223121625This anon is delusional
>>223121602I miss Chernobyl threads bros...
>>223128835brilliant
>>223128219That's true, I'm using it more as an anecdote.Point is, the whole chain really wasn't that dissimilar from Chernobyl - people doing shit they're not supposed to because they don't know better, design flaws that the operators aren't familiar with, lack of care and caution in an unusual situation, long standing maintenance and operation "optimizations" contrary to operating manuals, blocked or disabled automatic safeties and lack of belief and knowledge in how deeply they managed to fuck the situation up. It was mostly the fact that the reactor was less retarded in it's design and Americans didn't cheap out on safety measures as much as Soviets did that prevented a much bigger fuckup there.
I miss the /rbmk/ threads. Might have been the last time I was actually happy.

>>223129308I'd like to put my control rod between those neutrons.
>>223131073This>>223131101is why. Russians and honestly a lot of other nations with nuclear reactors would have blown the lid on something sooner or later. Americans for most part got a wakeup call in Three Mile Island but it took until Chernobyl for shit to actually start getting fixed and regulated internationally like it deserved.I mean, consider that India has about two dozen nuclear reactors in operation. The second they stop getting whipped into compliance that shit will spill.>>223129961We know literally nothing about what happened there because the only source is Dyatlov himself in a letter. It's very unlikely he was "in charge" or somehow responsible as he worked there right after graduating from university. If he was responsible he would undoubtedly been punished for it too. Also, while I will again reiterate that we know basically nothing, pretty much all Soviet nuclear submarine incidents have been due to sailors themselves doing stupid shit, see K-431.And yes, it has been theorized that his son died as a result of radiation exposure from the incident, whatever it was.Of note is that quite a few co-workers from Amur followed Dyatlov to Chernobyl. Seems weird if he was such an unrepentant asshole.
>>223124566that's not true
BUMP
Even with the woman meandering, the show would have been a 10/10 if not for the dog episode. It was slow and meaningless and did nothing to advance the plot, its only value was to appeal to cretins who need to be reminded that this is not merely an entertaining show but a catastrophe which had happened. We saw a miscarrying widow tell sweet lies to her dying husband but I suppose that's not enough as far as emotional damage goes, we have to show dying pups :(The scene with the babushka refusing to leave her house, though, that was pretty good
