In the US, this is how DBZ was localized>1989: Harmony Gold (most notoriously known for the Macross to Robotech adaptation) attempts the series with a cut of Dragon Ball movies 1 and 3 and the first five episodes, but this ultimately goes nowhere>1994: FUNimation gets the license through Gen Fukunaga's uncle Nagafumi Hori, a producer at Toei; they produce a pilot version of Curse of the Blood Rubies (which never goes into wide distribution) which uses the Harmony Gold character names (e.g., "Zero" for Goku)>1996: DBZ was originally dubbed by a Canadian cast in 1996, and the first 67 episodes were abridged to 53 episodes. Brian Drummond, Scott McNeil, Ian James Corlett.>1998: After two seasons in syndication, Saban (FUNimation's distributor) exists the syndication business, and so FUNimation produces an in-house version of Dragon Ball movie 2 ("Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle") with local Texas voices; around the same time, Cartoon Network picks up those first two seasons to air as repeats>1999: A third season broadcast of Dragon Ball Z begins on Cartoon Network, which then runs to completion in 2003, using yet another replacement score and local Texas voice actors. Chris Sabat, Sean Schemmel, Sonny Strait.>2001: FUNimation returns to the original Dragon Ball series, redubbing the first 13 episodes and moving on to the entire rest of the series>2003: FUNimation picks up Dragon Ball GT with an awful dub ( “The light breaks the dark, this form is my instrument, I have no limits” )>2005: "Ultimate Uncut" restored and redubbed the first 67 episodes with the Texas cast. Chris Sabat re-dubbed Vegeta throughout the entire Namek Saga>2010: FUNimation picks up Dragon Ball Z Kai to start over after the constant edits and re-dubs of the original dubs. Chris Ayres's Freeza debuts here

Marsters couldn't be paid as he was from the union and DBS was a non-union production, so in order to have a role in DBS, he had to use the pseudonym "David Gray" and take no salary>Chris Sabat sometimes does whatever he wants with lines which is why Hit talks about donuts in Super>Having Drummond as Copy Vegeta was actually Sabat's idea>Sean Schemmel always wanted Goku to go through a bonk on the head of magic to removing Goku's natural niceness and become evil again and Vegeta is the one that has to teach him to be good again>Kid Goku voice actor (Stephanie Nadolny) is currently in jail for DWI and Theft

>>223165118There's a lovely additional detail: director John Landis, who knew Chris Lee, recalled:“He and Peter Cushing loved Looney Tunes cartoons”Landis said that when Warner Bros. cartoons began appearing on home video, he would send Lee collections of them. He also remembered that Cushing and Lee shared a love of Laurel and Hardy.Lee apparently had quite a repertoire of impressions. One interviewer recalled Lee spontaneously doing Foghorn Leghorn, while other accounts mention his Sylvester impression. Most poignantly, Lee said that near the end of Cushing's life he brought some of their favourite cartoons to Cushing's home. Despite Cushing's illness, the cartoons still made him collapse with laughter in the old familiar way.So I would revise my earlier answer considerably: Peter Cushing wasn't merely “animation-adjacent.” He was demonstrably a cartoon fan, and Looney Tunes in particular was a significant shared enthusiasm between him and Christopher Lee. It seems to have been one of the things around which their extraordinary friendship formed. And there's an especially wonderful contrast in imagining Dracula and Van Helsing sitting in a cinema helplessly laughing at Sylvester and Tweety.https://www.hammer-graveyard.org.uk/peter-cushing-many-talents/
>>223168169
>>223168310>Cushing was an unusually visual person. He drew from childhood, regarded drawing as one of the few school subjects at which he excelled, painted watercolours, made cartoons and caricatures, designed costumes, constructed elaborate miniature theatres, and hand-painted thousands of model soldiers. As a child he and his brother also staged puppet shows, which is particularly suggestive of his interest in bringing drawn or constructed characters to life.>More revealingly, Cushing explicitly said that he had “always loved illustrations” and named Kate Greenaway, Beatrix Potter, Cecil Aldin and H. M. Brock among artists he admired. He said drawings meant as much to him as written words, and he was fascinated by mechanically operated pop-up and movable books—describing their paper engineering as “sheer magic and enchantment.” He was also influenced by Sidney Paget's Sherlock Holmes illustrations when constructing his own Holmes performances.

>>223163759>Chris Sabat redubbed over himself with a mix of 1999 recordings alongside 2007 recordingsSabat's old Vegeta voice is really fucking bad. You can tell he was trying to sound like Brian Drummond and failing miserably. I'm glad he eventually he established his own voice which is arguably better and more fitting. Drummond is perfect for Saiyan Saga Vegeta when he's a wormy little shit, but he sounds completely out of place by the Cell Saga.>>223163786>Bulma was recast simply because Chris Sabat didn't like her. This is a positive change, nu-Bulma is much less grating.>James Marsters, who played Piccolo in the Dragon Ball Evolution movie, offered to voice a character in Dragon Ball Super completely for free in order to "redeem" himself. Marsters couldn't be paid as he was from the union and DBS was a non-union production, so in order to have a role in DBS, he had to use the pseudonym "David Gray" and take no salary>Having Drummond as Copy Vegeta was actually Sabat's ideaOverwhelmingly based.
OP is a larping faggot. These vhs tapes weren't available until 2000 and definitely not available for rental at Blockbuster. Funi dub premiered in 1999 and was on the air for months.

>>223166416>There were even 1-2 episodes where Vegeta's new voice actor.... the guy who still does it now... he was trying to impersonate the older Vegeta voice actor and it was really bad.It was not just for 1-2 episodes anon, he didn't start trying to do his own thing until the buu saga. He went back and redubbed some of his early shitty impression in the frieza sagas which is what you hear in newer releases but he left it the same in the cell sagas for some reason
>>223157081Thats really not accurate at all youre trying way too hard to sound obtuse. The end fights of Dragonball, goku vs piccolo specifically, is the exact same intensity that Raditz opens on dbz
>>223170205Right there is no tournament but they still have all the weaker characters fight one on one, explain why were waiting ffor stronger guys, then the final fights are the stronger guys. Which is the same way the tournaments work out.
>>223168459There was a guy who used to work at funimation in the 90s who was the original narrator and voice of captain ginyu who had connections to the music industry from doing radio forever and he was able to cut cheap licensing deals for funimation. They didn't want to cheap out and not pay them though and the guy ended up leaving and with it all those deals he made because of his connections dried up and the subsequently stopped using any licensed music or tried using cheap as shit local bands

>>223176593That's when it was dubbed you tard. The vhs was released in Oct 2000.
>>223177757that was the dvd
>>223163930Multiple reasons. The content edits a show like Dragon Ball went through meant the music often times wouldn't match anymore. There's also the marketing angle. Dragon Ball was over 10 years by the time it gained widespread distribution in the U.S. Even if its music wasn't foreign in sound (which it very much did compared to the rest of the TV landscape in the west at the time), it was old. Then there's the money. Musicians can get paid royalties for foreign releases. The guy behind Dragon Ball's is one of the country's most successful composers and was regularly topping their highest grossing lists. The flip side is true, too. If you make a dub OST and intro/outro, you can sell it on soundtrack CDs without splitting that money with Japan. In fact, you can then license out your dub OST to other countries who create dubs of the show based on your version. Making music for French dubs of anime and selling records/licensing it out is how Haim Saban made his first fortune.
>>223166824He's probably referring to the accent clash compared to his original English voice. Scott McNeil, who is Australian himself, originally played Jeice with a British accent. When they got booted for cheaper actors, Jeice suddenly became Australian.Which is to say, the new cast cared so little for continuity they didn't replicate that. Either that or Sabat was actually incapable of copying McNeil's British accent to any decent level.
>>223177724>That power yell Jeice does when he's introduced in the Ocean DubAmazing. It's funny because he's voiced by Scott McNeil, and he was actually born in Australia.https://youtu.be/Ooq1cApIe0s?t=42
>>223173973biggest mistake
>>223157021Do you understand how crazy we were for new DBZ back then?I made a friend in Japan in 2000-2002, I forget the exact time period, through online connections and early internet era for DBGT.I was paying for four episodes recorded to video, hardsubbed in Japan, long before available in the US.I'd get a VHS for forty bucks, delivered from Japan, once a month. He would even clip most of the commercials, but sometimes you'd get the little Be Right Back and a commercial or two.25-30 MB DBZ downloads from KaZaa to fill out the series. On dial up.We used to have to TRY to find shit.
>>223167197Because they had no more episodes in English. As another anon stated, Toonami's initial lineup consisted of shows that had already aired elsewhere. In Dragon Ball Z's case, it premiered in syndication in 1996.If you don't know what syndication is, it's basically TV shows sold on a per station basis in each regional market rather than a national broadcaster. In NYC, a show might be sold to the local ABC station. In Los Angeles, the same series might run on Fox. In Miami, WB, etc. Networks (ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, UPN, WB, etc.) only provided so much programming and only so many markets could support extensive in-house shows. To fill up the rest of the broadcast day, these stations would acquire shows in the syndication market. This method of distribution was largely on its deathbed for kids (and really, new scripted) content in general by the time DBZ debuted. Local stations were already struggling to compete with cable channels for children and things like Dragon Ball Z were often aired in inconvenient early morning hours. By the early '00s, the only shows being syndicated were either reruns, gameshows (Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, etc.) or court shows.DBZ proved to be a modest hit through this method (Dragon Ball had failed the year prior). A second 26-episode season debuted in late 1997 and the first three films were getting direct-to-video releases. Things kind of fell out from under them in 1998. The show's syndicator (the company selling it to the local stations) and co-producer (Saban) had been merged into Fox Kids Worldwide and got out of syndication to prioritize Fox Kids and the Fox Family Channel. I guess DBZ just got lost in the shuffle because it wasn't something they had a big stake in. This is when production effectively stops dead.
>>223167197>>223180458The existing episodes of the dub got picked up by Toonami in 1998. They rerun the show constantly and eventually demand more as its popularity grew. Without Saban fronting part of the bill, the underlying rights holder (Funimation) decided against hiring the original dub's production crew to save money. It also didn't help that they were based in Texas and the original dub was done in Vancouver, so overseeing production was demanding. They decided to move production in-house with randos off the street. This obviously took time. The first of these new episodes eventually get released on VHS in mid-'99 before airing on Toonami in the fall. Further reruns would happen because Cartoon Network would burn through episodes (five days a week) faster than they'd acquire them from Funimation, who also obviously could only produce so much.>>223173165It was released on VHS before the Cartoon Network broadcast:https://www.kanzenshuu.com/1999/04/15/captain-ginyu-vhs-available-for-pre-order/https://www.kanzenshuu.com/1999/09/07/new-date-for-third-season-debut-on-cartoon-network/CN were definitely involved in making "season 3" happen, though: https://www.kanzenshuu.com/1999/02/06/agent-mai-funimation-tidbits/
>>223173973*They wanted to cheap out and not pay them though
>>223179781My theory is just that Sabat was retarded and didn't recognize was Ocean Jeice's accent actually was and thought it was australian
>>223157081Rurouni Kenshin is another famous example of this. The first 30-or-so episodes, it's like a show for six year olds, then a character named "Saito" shows up and suddenly the next 40 episodes are a bloodbath, with death matches and killing duels and whole villages getting slaughtered, babies getting taken hostage and almost killed, women being stabbed through from behind just to kill somebody standing in front of them. It's INSANE how much the tone shifted. Then the villain Saito and Kenshin were fighting finally gets killed and Saito just disappears and suddenly, the rest of the show is for six year olds again.
