Seems interesting, shame it's only 8 episodes but at least they're long episodes.

>Set in the rigid social world of the Joseon era, Madam Cho is a sharp and charismatic woman trapped by the strict limitations imposed on her because of her gender. Frustrated by a life dictated by rules she never chose, she decides to reclaim a sense of control in a daring way by orchestrating a calculated game of seduction.

>She challenges Cho Won, a notorious charmer who treats love as nothing more than a pastime, to win over Hui Yeon, a young widow devoted to a life of chastity after her husband’s death. Intrigued by the challenge and confident in his abilities, Cho Won accepts, seeing it as just another conquest.

>But Hui Yeon is not easily swayed. Determined to uphold her vows, she resists his advances, even as his persistence begins to stir emotions she has long suppressed. As the lines between manipulation and genuine feeling blur, all three find themselves entangled in a dangerous emotional game where desire, pride, and vulnerability collide, and no one is guaranteed to emerge unscathed.
>>
>cradles you in her arms and wipes your tears
>you come to your senses and get flustered, draw back a little to look into her face
>you're my mate
>of course i'll care for you, anon
>let me hold you again (softly)
>she gently embraces you once more; you feel as if you're entirely covered by her softness

Doctor X is basically just Trauma Code but with an OP lady doctor instead. It's fun but you won't be missing much if you never end up watching
>most of their more recent works have this super generic/overly digital look to them that I don't really dig... might just be me though idk
Not just you. When it comes to making money moves, they're a really ambitious studio. But that ambition doesn't often carry over into their dramas themselves I find. Maybe because they shit out so many, they don't really care to develop the more artistic aspects in a lot of them

Finished Family Matters.

Super spoilers, don't hover if you've not seen it: I kind of wish we could see simpler plots -- obviously the story here wasn't particularly 'complex' or 'deep' by any means, but I don't know why we always need some multi-headed plot with some evil organization or similar behind everything. I'd have honestly much preferred a more straight-forward supernatural family that just happens to get tangled up with an actual serial killer instead

YES! she was horny non stop and Holy shit she has a lovely body. I hope she gets more roles. I really like her smile more than anything too. the choices they all made (ML FL SFLs) were at times immensely retarded. but at the same time, regarding the women, he's a tall, fit, handsome and charming, he gives them an experience that makes enough of an impact that they don't wan't to just go to the police. and Its shot well, the acting is good, the settings are interesting. the sex scenes do play into the story just because of what actually transpires in each of them and the fact that some of them are discussed which makes them a plot point.

When asked what she would want to ask a celebrity if she were an intern reporter, Han Sohee replied, "I’d want to ask when they plan to get married."

When asked about her own marriage plans, she said, "I really want to get married before I turn 40. I don't have any fantasies about marriage itself, but I do have a dream of having a baby." I was actually thinking about this recently. There's kdramas that are relatively out-of-the-box in one way or another but I can't say I've seen any that I'd truly describe as "weird" let alone "experimental". I've found some unusual premises or striking visual styles out there, but there's always something tethering them to familiar kdrama grounds. Even something as crazy sounding as M really wasn't that wild in execution. Might just have to look harder I guess

>Does anything exist where you've wondered how they possibly got the funding for it?
I do sorta have an answer for this but not because of it being "intellectual" (it is not, though it may think it is). Freeze. They made that thing with $5 and a really bad dream

I'm less interested in literal "intellectual" dramas and more so, like, it feels like with films, we can easily smell the director and/or screenwriter through the screen and you can /easily/ find things that you KNOW was not some A/B-tested committee-written vessel for PPL. Of course, that was harder in the 2010s and even harder in the 2020s, but it's still possible in the more traditional cinema realm. But outside of Park Hae Young's scripts (My Liberation Notes, My Mister, We Are All Trying Here), I can't [personally] think of much where I'm like, "Oh yeah, I can tell a particular person worked on this". And obviously, even hers, while I can tell its her, they're still very conventional [good] stories.

I like the k-drama slop, don't get me wrong, but I'd really love to see something with actual soul that doesn't just feel like the next thing pushed by generic streaming-service, you know what I mean?

Quilt noona recommended me "Chicken Nugget", which I've yet to try. No idea how it is, but at the very least, the description sounds a little unusual.

im no car expert but it has a different radiator grills shape to the e38
this promo picture i can't seem to find the model name and its from a fucking official website lol, but note the shape of the air intakes next to the fog lights (the car in the movie is missing its left one) the rims are similar but the movie ones are more concave. not sure if that relates to year or model number. they look more like pic related but pic related has different fog light bumper design.

>I don't have any fantasies about marriage itself
wow That's sad. Not a romantic bone in her. She sounds like one of those misandrist korean women.
>>
>>223177444
Honestly I think alot of this a cope that many millenials and genz are experiencing. They're scared.
>>
>>223176651
Full warning, Freeze kinda sucks on a fundamental level. But the ending...idk how they even came up with that shit. Really a sight to behold.

Anyway, definitely get what you mean and that's another thing I think about pretty often. I've always appreciated being able to feel the hand of the creator in a work. And for how many hands are involved in kdramas, while there are some writers/directors whose style I can sense, there's more that are utterly devoid of any personality. Right off some assembly line, nobody had any fun in their creation. I try to think of them as fodder that generates money that can maybe eventually fund those who do it for the love of the game. But even with that copium, there are too many soulless cash-grabs and not enough passion projects
If you haven't checked out The Affair Was Just The Beginning, I'd highly recommend it
>>
>>223177940
Thanks! Yeah, I haven't seen The Affair Was Just The Beginning. Ntl kept going on about the cinematography so I was tempted, though. I'll check it out.

>nobody had any fun in their creation
Yeah, exactly. There's nothing more in the world that I want than to feel like I've been barely invited along for something -- like "I made this for myself, but if you want to watch too, that's fine". I want something where you just know everyone involved enjoyed what they were doing.
>>
>>223178033
Doesn't even have to be "good". I'm fine with something that doesn't quite work, but still has soul.
>>
>>223178033

But yeah

This is where I'm at too.
>>
>>223177518
men need to be worried about marriage, not women. saying stuff like that is what you do after you've taken the misandry pill or had a hundred+ sexual partners. even western college foids who have gangbangs once a week still dream of marriage.
>>
>>223178241
Lol, he was definitely going on about it, but I might've confused some of the other posters with him. Sorry!

Also, none of these are dramas, but I've been on a film binge, and there's a few that fit my personal criteria if you're ever searching for Korean media. For some context about my preferences, I think my favorite movies are Love Exposure, Survive Style 5+, Fallen Angels, and Why Don't You Play in Hell? (or Monty Python).

Most of these aren't "avant-garde" or "experimental", but they do have soul, they aren't A/B tested, you can feel the author, they aren't super-duper well-known.

- Resurrection of the Little Match Girl (2002) | https://letterboxd.com/film/resurrection-of-the-little-match-girl/ (intended to be an ultra high-budget blockbuster, but failed commercially and probably should've ended ~45 minutes earlier, but if it isn't visually awesome at times)
- Dasepo Naughty Girls (2006) | https://letterboxd.com/film/dasepo-naughty-girls/
- Almost Che (2012) | https://mydramalist.com/6283-almost-che
- Volcano High (2001) | https://letterboxd.com/film/volcano-high/
- Milky Way Liberation Front (2007) | https://letterboxd.com/film/milky-way-liberation-front/
- Emergency Act 19 (2002) | https://letterboxd.com/film/emergency-act-19/ (objectively not great, but it's a 6.5/7 that just wouldn't get made now)
- Attack the Gas Station! (1999)
- The Foul King (2000) | https://mydramalist.com/1386-the-foul-king (most mainstream title, but not super popular for a Song Kang-ho movie - genuinely very good, funny, well-made, unlikely to exist now, etc)
- The People in White (1995) | https://letterboxd.com/film/the-people-in-white/ (I really liked this, but I did not "enjoy" it; it's incredibly well-made, but it feels like the Korean version of Tarkovsky, so if you can't handle gruellingly long shots and the slowest burn of your life... but if you like Stalker or Solaris)
- Geo-lobotomy (2005) | https://letterboxd.com/film/geo-lobotomy/
>>
>>223178925

And I've also been watching a lot of Korean short films recently. I like them not only because, often at 20-30 minutes each, you can pack in 4-5 shorts for each feature-length film, but also because they tend to be really premise-heavy and focus on a single element or gimmick that genuinely works.

They're great for inspiration and seeing everybody's style:

- Digital Video Editing with Adobe Premiere Pro: The Real-World Guide to Set Up and Workflow (2020) | https://letterboxd.com/film/digital-video-editing-with-adobe-premiere-pro-the-real-world-guide-to-set-up-and-workflow/
- Influenza (2004) - Bong Joon-ho | https://letterboxd.com/film/influenza/
- If You Were Me (2003) | https://letterboxd.com/film/if-you-were-me/ (this one is an awesome anthology with like five or six short films in it. They were comissioned by the Korean National Human Rights Comission, so they mostly focus on various social issues, but some of them are seriously great. I loved the second one about a bed wetter and sexual predator, the third one about a kid struggling with his English pronunciation, this one "Crossing" -- a black comedy about a guy with cerebral palsy -- and the final one by Park Chan-wook)
- Twentidentity (2003/2004) | https://letterboxd.com/film/digital-short-film-omnibus-project-twentidentity-vol-2/ (Another omnibus/anthology. This one is a series of early digital shorts to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Korean Film Academy. They're very cool as time capsule pieces)

I can send links if anyone has any interest.

I've yet to come across a kdrama that really breaks away from the commercial formula, visually or narratively. Of course looks matter. What kind of bizarre cope is this? When you watch a show or movie you are looking at people for a long time. They way they look, the way the show is filmed. All of the way it looks is important. Imagine someone looking at you and you have a bunch of boogers hanging from your nostrils. They aren't going to want to see that and you can't just ask incredulously "caring about looks?" When you are gross to look at.
>>
>>223182328
do we even watch the same show? He fucking knows he’s a shitty person, a useless piece of shit who gets easily jealous of other people’s achievements because he has nothing going on in his own life. that’s why he copes by doing things that hurt everyone around him, he doesn’t know what else to do. at some point, he even explained to gyeongse why he did that. It’s fucking raw.

Well the other poster was saying they don't like the characters' character. Like you say they're a shitty person. Why are you going to want to self insert as a shitty person. Also like you say subjective. There are many flavours also of shitty people maybe a virgin neet is a shitty person or a conservative family man it doesn't matter, you aren't going to gel or self insert with a character that reminds you of a person or persons that you didn't like.
>>
>>223182411
So he has moments of clarity. I'm saying its best to not care if he figures it out or not after 20 years. Its best to avoid people like dongman and surely not consider him a charity case. Hes responsible for his life and I mine. I don't have to open the door when he knocks.

we are just watching some pages of these characters’ lives. its not like he’s done trying to fix himself. its not like Eunha is done with her hatred for her mom. its not like Gyoungse is done with his insecurities. thats why the title dropped. We Are All Trying Here.
>>
>>223182752
I think I agree with the other poster. Do you really want to be on the recieving end of a shitty person's actions? No. Sever ties and enjoy a more drama free life. Maybe he becomes tolerable later in life, but I don't care, I've moved on.
>>
>>223182752
>he’s done trying to fix himself
The thing is its not required of me to stand there as he lashes out in the hope he figures it all out. I'm also saying real life experience has taught me they almost never do and will bite your extended hand. If you want to do it fine but not me. I'll extend my helping hand to those in real need.
>>
>>223182832
watching a character in a television show isn't having that person in your actual life. some of you all confuse characters in fiction with real life I think, you know you can like something even if the characters are doing something you don't like or approve of right?
>>
>>223182873
Why take this back handed swipe and assume anyone that disagrees with your take so stupid they cannot separate a show and real life and in need of a good correcting. Sounds like dongman
>>
>>223182913
because that's the way you're posting. there's a similar pattern with all the cuckoldry nonsense posters, they feel like if a woman or a character in a show does something they don't like they have to hate the show or it's a reflection on them personally.
>>
>>223182873
I'm not the one that bought up self inserts. Which is the action of applying your real self to a character.
>you know you can like something even if the characters are doing something you don't like or approve of right?
Everyone knows this. It's like a villain in a show people can like because even if their actions are reprehensible they are good at what they do. as opposed to a villain that does bad stuff but has no charm or completely pathetic. That actor played a very capable and reprehensible villain in "colony". I can respect the character. But playing a whiny parasite in this show is not a good character.
>>
>>223182832
>>223182855
shitty person’s actions? again, do we even watch the same show? what kind of shitty things did he even do to Eunha, that one guy from his group of eight, or that step daughter actresses. i think aside from trash talking movies, he’s just a normal guy. he even stated that if you are nice to him, he will be nice to you and hopes you have a great day
>>
>>223182972
why not? was he not a convincing "whiny parasite" to you? because it seems like he was considering you're getting so worked up over the character and having such a visceral reaction to him.
>>
>>223182925
>they feel like if a woman or a character in a show does something they don't like they have to hate the show
If you don't like a characters actions in a show, it's ok to dislike a show. There is nothing wrong with that. Why is that so controversial to you? Do you like it when characters do a bunch of violent shit to each other? No. Ok then you don't have to like the show.
>>

i don't even self insert as these either. (do you always need to self insert when you watch a show?) a good villain is one who got to where they were by hard work and when facing the "hero" they don't just melt into nothing instantly. they are strong or cunning and maybe in another life they would have been the hero. You can at least respect a worthy opponent. not some whiny fag. the whole shit about social rejects, terrify all of this is more mischaracterization.

the way to described villains is proving my point that it's a power fantasy for you, which is why you don't have the same visceral reaction to those characters like you do characters like dong-man or any number of others because you can see yourself or possible situations you might actually find yourself in.
>>
>>223183939
im trying to speak in simple terms for john to understand but he keeps acting like cathy newman "uh so what ur sayin is this" and its completely wrong each time.

its very simple you have a character that is a whiny fag. people dont like him because he is pathetic and parasitical. john doesn't understand that he isn't pleasant because john relates to this character and john sees himself as very likeable.
this position that we have makes john assume we can't relate to anyone that is unpleasant or that we are somehow lacking some empathy or some media literacy or that we're rigid conservatives. all mischaracterizations. Its weird that he thinks its good to lean into a shitty character because its there to lean into. this doesn't mean he has some great intellect. does he sit in fields and lean into cowshit just because it's there? no. or does he?

because Korea won. that's gonna be full of smut and they're gonna undercut any serious emotional moments with shitty jokes.

>muh hard work
>muh cunning
>muh respect
>muh strength
>even though bad guy
you couldn't come up with a more stereotypical male power fantasy if you tried.

For some reason I've been following kdg much less the last week or two. It's a bit sad, and I feel disconnected since kdg were my only friends.

bad poll, two dislike options are leading with subjective conclusions.
>>
>>223184196
good poll, three dislike options give nuance to the results.
>>
>>223184202
The problem is that watching drama is the only thing I enjoy, so it's difficult to meet people and make friends since I share none of their interests.
>>
>>223184185
you're like a meathead bully character in an after school special except at least they usually at least learn a lesson at the end about how they've just been projecting their insecurities on to the their victims.
>>
>>223184105
i watched the first episode of this show. It's really is a boys over flowers clone kek
1st ep is entertaining enough
>>
>>223184250
its the only thing you 'currently' enjoy. you go out and try new things and maybe you'll enjoy new things. you took the leap to try out kdramas after all. When you go and do something like joining a club or or volunteering, usually your group will have things to do and goals to achieve. so you don't necessarily have to talk about a great deal aside from what you're doing. also talking to people and listening to what they do and trying to have some interest in their things is good. they'll try to have at least some interest in yours at least to keep the conversation flowing. maybe you'll interest them in your kdramas and maybe they'll interest you in whatever they're into.
>>
>boys over flowers clone
there's only 1 good boys over flowers clone, meteor garden starring the park bo young of china shen yue

>you're like a meathead bully character
nope. but things in this world don't get done by whiney weak people, man or woman its those who are brave or cunning, who persevere, who break through and ignore their insecurities. those are the ones who make change.

>>223184322
I tried that before. Even did the whole meetups thing. My inability to connect with people just left me more depressed. I'm just messed up. There's no hope for me.

We prefer cinderella and the four knights here

idk I don't really keep up with her like park bo young
>>
>>223184464
are you an aspie? did you just not care about the other people at all? did you want to only talk about kdramas the whole time non stop? I mean not everyone is pleasant either, i've volunteered with people i dont like, one guy will not shut up about gaza, its like arguing with john here. do you go out for walks, or even exercise in your domicile? do you get the heart racing, the blood pumping at least? i would dance to music (badly) if i was ever indoors for weeks at a time. it was better than nothing. There are people out there for you to connect with im sure of it. hell maybe befriending internet people is the first step.

>proving my point
what point are you trying to make? that i respect those that aren't whiney over those that are and that to do so is some sort of power fantasy?
and yes everyone who gets shit done is a meathead bully. simply ask your father whether its better to be weak and whiney or strong and courageous.

>t. peanut gallery
>>
>>223184523
I am an aspie, yes, and I do find it hard to care what they're talking about. But I don't try to talk about anything nonstop because I never have anything to talk about and assume no one wants to hear it even if I did
>>
>>223184583
Not so fast dongman. I was one of the anons you took issue with while discussing dingdongman. Real life took me away from here for 30 minutes
>>
>>223184583
so bizarre. once again people who had differing opinions to you resulted in you making personal attacks on them. how can you be so deluded?
>>
>>223184598
fair enough, i struggle to care too at times, though im not an aspie, its probably just depression for me. are there any other online places to talk to other people about kdramas at least? then you can find others that aren't just anons to chat with.
