I have a strict "no black and white films" policy: Films that were made before color film became the norm are so old that they cannot tell me anything salient for my contemporary existence; they are anachronistic by now and just as boring as reading about the punic wars.
And films that have been produced in black and white in the modern era are pretentious and pseudo-intellectual. They can (and should) be discarded out of hand. Even art photography that is not in color should be met with contempt. I would go as far as calling the black and white craze a mass psychosis.

Lauren Bacall was so fucking amazing in this. Just 19 years old, her debut acting role, and positively oozing sex on the screen. Her hotness is on par with Barbara Stanwyck in Double Indemnity and Rita Hayworth in Gilda, but they were older (36 and 26/27 respectively) and already seasoned actresses. No wonder Bogie hooked up with her (and ended up divorcing his third wife to marry her).

Oh I watch black films alright

As a pretentious contrarian film noir pisses me off because all the highly acclaimed and praised films from the genre really are amazing and the best that could be offered, while all of the obscure ones are rightfully forgotten. I've yet to find that "hidden gem".

True Bacall is smoking hot in this, but what's ironic is that it was also her peak. She's not quite as hot in Big Sleep and comes nowhere close to those levels again. Delores Moran is also hot af in To Have and Have Not and normally would be a standout but Bacall outshines her. Agreed about Stanwyck and Hayworth too. Everyone recognizes how sexy Hayworth was but many overlook Stanwyck for some reason. She's sexy as hell, especially in the first half of her career.

Just finished rewatching Key Largo. It's as good as it gets.

I can't afford it any more and it bums me out, had to give it up during covid and haven't quite gotten back to being able to add it again. I miss their Summer Under the Stars and other special programming. At least Eddie Muller is active on yt with his Ask Eddie shows.
