Not a maymay post. Not allowed here. This film is legitimately a masterpiece. When you watch it, you think it is a realistic depiction of American sports and it's all there is to it. But that's not it. It is more like Taxi Driver, almost. It is still a film. The realistic stuff is not at the forefront, even though it does feel like it. Spike Lee is genius because of this illusion. It is about a criminal man (Denzel) who is given a chance to convince his son to join the police's favourite college sport team and he can be out. As the movie goes on, you become very unsure if the father is really connecting with his son or if he's just slow playing him for a chance at freedom (which adds to that character study screenwriting). And then at the end, when the son has to make a choice of choosing which college he will attend to. The movie stakes are high. And side note, it is a legitimate mature film. The sex and nude scenes are the best I have ever seen for a film. I am not kidding. Spike Lee directs them almost like a cinematic porn movie. Movies never feel like those.
Its scary the reason he was sent to prison and how suddenly disaster can strike.The two girls they get to convince him to join the college team were the most cynical looking prostitutes they could find. They even had sub par breast augmentation. I dont known if the implication was that they were college students.
The throat strike he does is cool and devastating if pulled off.
