I enjoyed this quite a bit. It's basically the first movie but slightly worse in terms of characters, writing, dialogue etc. but where the first used each room as an opportunity for a gory setpiece, Hypercube uses theoretical physics to present each room as a different kind of distortion of spacetime. In both films, the gory destruction of the characters leads the survivors to turn on each other and become more desperate; both build up suspense through characters' growing awareness of their impending doom. It's been a while since I saw the first Cube, but I remember that element being handled better there. The interpersonal conflict is more convincing and disturbing in the first film. There were probably more death scenes also. But Hypercube exploits quantum physics to good effect, with some truly memorable and weird scenes. It feels kind of unique, despite its flaws. I found it weird that people complain about the CGI... It was only 2002, and a lower budget film. You will still see people complain about the CGI, on envelopeboxd. I thought it was perfectly fine for this film, though the impact would have been greater with better quality CGI. I suppose my perspective is different since I care more about the art style, concept and intention of effects, than the fidelity of them. My main complaint is that once the central conceit of the film is revealed, you start to care less about the fate of the characters and are instead interested in seeing whatever bizarre spacetime distortions the film will throw at you. Cube left you with some hope that a character may actually escape, whereas Hypercube feels far bleaker, like some kind of cosmic horror where the characters are completely at the mercy of this indifferent, implacable force. But that's also a strength of the film in my eyes, so I don't mind.

They get to the helicopter but the woman character gets grabbed by a zombie, then it hard cuts to her waking up on a tropical island with the other two survivors. I always interpreted this as a possible dream sequence, where Romero is leading us to question whether they do actually escape. So either it's a dream or the afterlife.

Monkey is much more psychological and doesn’t leave you with the annoyance of “not knowing” because everything is either abstract enough to be applicable to multiple things or straightforward enough to be self-evident by the end.
