His humor just did not translate well into an earlier timeslot. Late Night was so great. Even the early stuff before the show took off.
>>
>>223174695
He dropped most of what made his show good to suit the TTS.

Did Leno even do anything?

He won

He's the most successful failure in late night. Couldn't stop falling upwards. The Late Night sketch writers and actors made the show. His monologue and interviewing was well known to be bad, which is literally the only time he has to do anything. Late Night sucks ass so hard in the first year yet he doesn't get cancelled. They're expecting to be cancelled. So they do random shit for the hell of it, yet don't get pulled off air. The Tonight Show bombs. He manages to segue that into another late night show. TBS gets tired of his shit. He manages to follow through in to a popular podcast. This isn't a fumble.
A real fumble would be the Late Night show getting cancelled back in 93, and he goes back to writing jobs where nobody ever knows his name. In another reality his IMDB page are but a few writing credits, and he doesn't even have a Wikipedia page.
He's the Homer Simpson of Late Night. He could not do the basic fundamental job of interviewing properly. Yet everyone some how laughs with him, not at him. He could make fart sounds with his armpit into a microphone for an hour and get millions of listeners and sponsors lining up sign deals. Somewhere there's a Frank Grimes of late night who is completely flabberghasted at how this guy has a nice home, and a nice wife, and a nice family. This bumbling idiot of a talk show host who can't even interview people. Oh god it's me isn't it..

Leno's legacy is rotting at this point, though. Conan got the last laugh.

>This bumbling idiot of a talk show host who can't even interview people
I don't give a damn about the lives and thoughts of celebs. I want someone who'll make me laugh, nothing more. Conan was way ahead of his time for mastering the art of producing random inane shit, an art Letterman dabbled in but never fully embraced. That's all I want, is a host who'll entertain me with random inane shit. Conan and Craig Ferguson were the only two guys who could manage that niche.

>The Tonight Show with Conan O'BRien
The Jacobite rebellion of our times, right down to the Celtic romanticism. Conan is Millennials' King Across the Water.

Conan himself was never funny. AT BEST he selected good guests. I don't care if he worked on the simpsons. I don't care that he went to harvard. I don't care if he's 6ft 3-5in.

All in all the only late night show host that was good was Craig Ferguson and its more because he was interesting and didn't suck his guests assholes like others.
Johnny wasn't THAT good, he was pretty much the only guy, and Don Rickles is fantastic.

Leno wasn't funny.
Letterman wasn't very funny, funnier than Leno, but still not very funny, and like Conan could pick good guests.
Fallon isn't funny.
Kimmel fucking sucks.
Colbert fucking sucks.
Corden fucking sucked.
Meyers fucking sucks.

conans podcast has shown what a terrible interviewer he is. he spends most of every episode hijacking the conversation talking about himself, talks over people, needs to relate every story a person tells back to about himself and how he worked on saturday night live and the simpsons and harvard

>conans podcast has shown what a terrible interviewer he is.
None of them are good interviewers. It's all rehearsed nonsense. Ferguson seemed to be the only one who could have a relaxed conversation with people.

leno is a household name like letterman and carson.
the ginger's legacy is being a writter in the simpson and loving haiti a bit too much.
>>
he wasn't weird enough anymore for his old audience once the internet took off but he was too weird for old people

Fergusan claimed he never watched late night shows

Lost half of his production and writing staff moving to la for the tonight show.
Lost another 3rd or more moving from nbc to tbs.
Couldn't do weird sketches with props and costumes on a tbs budget.
Conan couldn't cut it. He's boring.

Hugely popular.
Way more than MDE ever was or could hope to be.
Make a movie with nothing but bottom of the barrel rehashed bits from awesome show and lots of swear words.
Direct yourself instead of your awesome show crew, and have a professional cinematographer who makes everything ugly.

Then get TDS and dig into that world for 10 years, instead of doing anything original or timeless.

Late Night was legit funny and he had the right idea from the get go even if it took him a while to find his footing: Do Dave but don't try to be Dave.
Conan never had the charisma to do the 'laughing at retards smugly' Dave could do with oddball guests, so Conan took that and leaned more into the zanier aspects of Dave's Late Night and that did work.

It's also why he hasn't been funny since. All the real oddball stuff he gave it up for The Tonight Show and never once tried to get it back. He's militantly unfunny and has been for 20 years.

>>223177804
Literally nobody knows who Conan is compared to Steven Hyde bro.
>>
>>223176475
Did he ever share the story of how he got late night? I ve never heard him talk about that
>>
>>223180618
He's talked about it about a million times, moron
>>
>>223177896
I think if Richard Pryor had been the Tonight Show host as was intended, Conan would still work in the same way. The original Late Night With Conan O'Brien was kind of the delayed late night humor Dave's show was supposed to do with sketches that bordered on obscene in that time slot.

It sounds like the main gripe against Conan in this thread is that there are fags who get jealous that he gets more laughs than they do.
