This episode had me a bit confused, it's a decent ending to the 2016 timeline, but felt kinda quick and without much. Feels like Macon and Aatran were designed to be either red hearings of Black and Red Lanterns respectively, but they are gone. The black stuff is still unexplained and idk if they will touch it in the next episodes.

But they didn't really nerf it all that much. He made a giant drill, he can presumably make a vacuum. The trouble with nerfing his powers is that it breaks the whole mythology. If Green Lanterns can easily be taken out by rudimentary modern firearms, then why are there Green Lanterns in the first place? How exactly are they protecting the galaxy?

And to be fair, Green Lantern is one of the most contrived comic book characters because the powerset is hugely OP. But if you're going to do a story like this, you have to be creative about creating challenges. You can't just have characters regularly forget their godlike powers of creation sometimes and then use them other times.

The story isn't even all that bad, it just gets frustrating when it refuses to play by it's own rules. They probably would have been better served to give John a reason to be weak to human-level threats and have Hal cutting through opponents like butter.
