I don't know if the stuntman in question had life insurance but John Wayne and John Ford were both well-known to be men of honor and men of generosity. They probably did something to help out the widow, they probably kept the family in mind when they had other films and needed extra hands, the son or nephew or brother of a dead stuntman would be given a lot of opportunities to make some money on future films. That's typically how things like that were taken care of, and it usually wasn't publicized. The really sad thing about movies like Light Brigade where they killed all those horses is that there is a way to TRAIN a horse to take a fall that looks just as good or even better on camera. Yakima Canutt was a very famous rodeo rider and stuntman and actor who trained hundreds of other stuntmen and thousands of horses in all kinds of tricks that were generally safe but looked deadly dangerous on film. He was a friend of Wayne and Ford both and they used him in some capacity in almost all their Westerns, usually as a stuntman, technical supervisor, and extra. Being half-Indian, he often played an Indian brave, sometimes taking multiple falls in the same film wearing different costumes.Because Canutt and his trained horses were so expert in taking spectacular falls, many people refused to believe that the horses didn't die or get crippled. He was even one of the other chariot riders in the infamous Ben-Hur scene where another stuntman DID die, and that man's widow insisted that the director use the footage of his death so her husband wouldn't have died "for nothing." Movies like Charge of the Light Brigade were horses were killed with real tripwires were the result of directors who didn't know or didn't care that there were much better and safer ways to achieve the same result.

Braveheart for years faced accusations of killing horses for real, and in reality, not one animal was injured, but a lot of people just flatly refused to believe it.
