Indiana Jones movies were made to be good movies first and foremost. Fun adventures. Not saying the prospect of toys and deals didn't help get the movies funded, but I don't think it was the driving factor.

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny have the benefit of simply being boring. That's their crime. They're just dull movies with no energy to their filmmaking. People have neither the will to reassess their quality and act like they were really good, nor do they care enough about the movies to think they're an unholy abomination. They're both just a void, especially Dial of Destiny which has been completely memory holed after flopping. They really should have James Bonded Indiana Jones. The clue was already in the third film, with Sean Connery portraying his father. While Harrison Ford could have done a 1990s Jones film or few, he was already looking old by the end of that decade, and especially the 2000s. Dr Jones is a character that should generally best pertain to a broad era around between 1920 and 1950, with the 1930s as the archetypal medium.
