Cross of Iron is the best war movie ever. It has something to say about the disconnect between the aristocracy and the common soldier and idealism vs realism, all without beating you over the head with it. The battle scenes are gory and over the top but nothing that makes you roll your eyes like Pearl Harbor or some shit. It's also grimy and atmospheric and not in a fake way like Hacksaw Ridge or the like.
The ending with the children signing while the guy is screaming in terror in the trenches while the guy laughs at him threw me off. That scene's stayed with me.

When he finally has to fight instead of just ordering others to do it, he can't figure out how to use it (safety was on or it jammed, I forget). That's why the protagonist is laughing at him.

The German nobility had absolute massive casualty rates in the world war. This was just Peckinpah projecting US relations between commoners and the elite draft dodgers in the wake of Vietnam.
