In Britain they had a similar thing with the original Dr Who, but it was people who bought into the British establishment and people who really didn't like it at all (all of them much more extreme but also much more polite than in Star Trek desu). In general they believed that the audience could be trusted to make up their own mind in a way that doesn't happen today.

We continued to get some of this through DS9 and VOY, and some echoes in ENT.
