The peasant's account is the true one. He reveals that neither the samurai, his wife, or the bandit conducted themselves with any honor and they all lied out of ego. He has no reason to lie because he's a nobody with no reputation or position to protect, and didn't want to talk to the authorities because he also stole the wife's expensive dagger
