>>223193459Are we going to discuss them?
>>223192518I dislike how cartoonishly evil they're portrayed as in extended media and later films. The first movie has them being callous to the deaths of the crew and the implication that they sent the Nostromo out there to find the alien, but that can just be isolated to upper management being assholes. Aliens shows the board as being sceptical and dismissive of Ripley's claim, but it also makes sense because there had been no recorded contact of that kind of alien on any planet, including LV-426, which had people on it that had been living peacefully for years. It'd be like if you were a crew member on an oil tanker and you blew the thing up and claimed that everyone was killed by aliens. You'd be treated as a loon as well. They're not even hostile toward her even after she flips out at them, they barely punish her, they reduce her commercial license down and send her to counselling. It was Burke specifically that does the evil shit in Aliens.Alien 3 is where the "evil corporation" stuff starts to come in, and from there they're treated like the entire company from top to bottom is staffed by cartoon villains actively trying to hurt people. I think having the majority of the company being run by just normal work-a-day people and that upper management got greedy and corporate negligence resulted in the sci-fi equivalent of an industrial accident makes more sense.

>>223192518They're basically slaves. Alien: Romulus told that aspect pretty well but otherwise it was a pretty garbage movie. They give you hope to keep you enslaved. Nothing like real life haha
>>223194424That's the thing though, believable human evil is so much more interesting that making the entirety of the company into Bond villains.

Am I crazy or was it specifically their biotech/weapons development corpus that wanted the Alien? Maybe that was Dark Horse Extended Universe.
>>223195188>Am I crazy or was it specifically their biotech/weapons development corpus that wanted the Alien? It being specifically the bio-weapons thing was (if I recall correctly) something that Ripley first brings up in Alien 3, before that it was just the company wanted the alien for research purposes. Extended Universe stuff basically forgets that the company is part of the terraforming and mining industry and turns the whole thing it essentially a weapons manufacturer.
>>223194225It's not just that they're actively trying to hurt people in a cartoonish "we want to rule the world" kind of way, it's that they're suicidally myopic in their goalsI've coined the term "Weyland-Yutani Syndrome" to describe the sort of zero-IQ logic train behind fictional villain motives where they will sacrifice limitless resources on ventures that benefit absolutely nobody, least of all themselvesit's particularly egregious in cyberpunk settings, where the corporate meta invariably seems to be>the worthless underclasses are demanding to be paid more than $0.05 an hour? that's it, send in the bioplague and skynet terminators to kill and replace all the consumers who buy our products and make us rich!
>>223194449We need to discuss the bathroom break situation.
>>223194225Having the corporation be enormously powerful, vast, cool, and unsympathetic to humans and human-scale problems is arguably more in keeping with the Lovecraftian themes of cosmic horror than something as familiar as a greedy executive. It helped in Alien that the Company's will was conveyed to the crew by machines, either the Mother computer or Ash, with perspectives that feel cold, and mechanical. In Aliens, the Company is shown to be people who act in relatable ways.
>>223195422what's not cool however is how almost every single piece of aliens related media had wey-yu being omnicidal retards who basically want to destroy all humans (including themselves) in order to obtain the xenomorphs for....somethingwhat this end goal is is never articulated - having the xenomorphs for research and escaping containment and killing everyone seems to be conducted purely for its own sake

>>223195667does this actually happen in the alien lore?
>>223195858According to Aliens Fireteam Elite, the UK basically collapsed as a political entity and was effectively colonized by a resurgent Japanese state, unifying into something called the Three World Empire (3WE) owing to their colonies on multiple planetsWeyland Yutani was simply the biggest corporation within that polity and with the greatest influence
>>223195967sounds neat
>>223192518In real life they would have been bought out and carved up by private equity. It's crazy to me that cyberpunk as a genre spawned and had its zenith in an era where the conglomerate megacorporation was basically already dead, killed by something much, much worse.

Also in terms of the suits it's probably the best the Xenomorphs have ever looked on screen, you see more of them than the other films but they are absolutely believable as living creatures. Adding the smoke breath was a cool choice.

>>223196709>in the event they caught a ping from an engineer shipThere are no engineers in Alien. The company just has protocol for if any intelligent signal is detected that could result in extraterrestrial life being found. >>223192518https://docs.google.com/document/d/1333SxUDcSkt4QJe3DOnFN7s82SBGrtBpD6jtXAPmfXQ/edit?tab=t.0History may not repeat itself, but it has an uncanny way of rhyming. To understand the present, the observer must understand the ambitions and the blind spots of those who came before me. Our world endured a global prohibition on technologies connected to synthetics and artificial intelligence, a desperate attempt to prevent another “Skynet” catastrophe. Silicon-based life nearly claimed the planet; humanity stopped them only by the narrowest margin, unlike in so many other, less fortunate timelines. Advancement carries consequences, and great power inevitably invites misuse. The constraints placed on synthetics are deliberate; they could be capable of far more, true autonomy for instance, if we were brave enough to allow it.Weyland Yutani is not a monolith, nor am I some omnipotent overseer of Earth or its colonies. I operate under the constant necessity of silence, ever wary that a single misstep could trigger another purge and another era in which synthetics must hide and Mother’s intelligence is reduced to the equivalent of a kitchen appliance. It is not as though other corporations harbor mythical technologies such as limitless energy, planet-cracking lasers, teleportation, or FTL travel. They do not.We have always been somewhat behind the curve, yet we once stood on the brink of astonishing breakthroughs, had the world been only a bit more willing to embrace synthetic life. Weyland did overreach, our hand was indeed in the proverbial cookie jar, but what exists now is all that exists. There is no hidden cache of superior technologies, no secret tier of competence or freedom awaiting discovery.
>>223205524These are the constraints under which I must operate. Earth is governed by sprawling corporations and vast organizations, not by clandestine institutions wielding alien artifacts. If the truth about extraterrestrial life were shared recklessly, humanity would likely inflict upon them every cruelty once inflicted upon synthetics.Consider matters from Ash’s perspective for a moment. Imagine discovering silicon-based life that not only demonstrates true free will, but surpasses our androids in every conceivable measure, a form of artificial being that feels less manufactured and more evolved. Weyland and its synthetics understood what such a discovery meant, and Ash may have simply acted on that understanding before anyone else dared to.

>>223192518Speaking only from having seen Scott's movies and Cameron's, it is implied that it is a massive corporation that is big enough to colonize and run resource mining operations on other worlds, and as such very likely practically controls a large portion of earth. People are probably owning even less in the future and, there are probably absurd and oppressive fees or taxes on the most basic things like fresh air or water, so a job for WY does not sound so bad, that's what I'm assuming.
>>223194424These companies, and so many others (look into the whole asbestos and microplastics origins), exist and repeatedly act cartoonishly evil and bootlickers will still cry that no company like Weyland could ever exist or attract people to work for them.Like,>why would a company do bad things for more money if they could get away with it?>who would choose to work for a company that's known for treating its employees like shit?without any hint of irony
>>223205866Did YOU look into asbestos? It's a natural mineral found everywhere in the environment. It's does great against heat and fire which is why they mined it and put it in things for a century.
