Why didn’t Eladio waste Gus along with his partner? He makes reference to Gus being connected back in Chile but obviously those connections aren’t too powerful or he wouldn’t be in Mexico begging for table scraps.

He was important and connected enough that there would be ramifications and retaliation if he was killed but not his associate. He teases him by calling him generallisimo. Plenty of military strongman in the junta in chile. The cia made sure of that. They thought they could break him and he would toe the line. They miscalculated.
