It was hard to grasp the idea of a rated R Joker movie back then. You wondered how far they would take it. This was when the Joker still had this mythological aura to him and you were mesmerized by the idea of a definitive origin story for him. It was a movie everyone talked about, even people who didn’t watch movies went to see it, people who never went to the theatres like my parents went to see it, all their boomer friends and coworkers talked about it. It was definitely a cultural touchstone. Not sure how they’ll ever top this or Ledgers Joker. I just can’t see Matt Reeves doing anything remotely as interesting with the Joker as Nolan or Phillips did.
