I recently finished this, about a week ago. I was putting it off for ages, picking it up and abandoning it, but eventually I went ahead and just got it over with. I don't get why people love it. The whole time it felt like watching a sterile afterschool special in "space". The plots always ended abruptly, the overarching storylines were complete non-entities and my main problem with the show, and Trek in general, is that the whole setting is very shallow. The races are either deep as a puddle stereotypes, or used as one-off stand-in stereotypes. The aesthetic is 80s Dentist's Office, which in the [current year] is just watered down globohomo. Everyone and everything is downright ugly and repulsive to the human psyche. The whole thing is some Califag's jerk-off fantasy about how humanity will become enlightened 90s Liberals, conquer the laws of physics, then proceed to wear pajamas and get fucked by bony wolf-spider-hybrids. It's a very anti-human work in its entirety. And the worst bit is that there's just no nuance to it.I was told that while it's left-leaning, it's essential a show about professionals dealing with conundrums. But there's never really a conundrum that's not solved by singing kumbayah or spouting technobabble. There are episodes such as the one where the space-Irish-hicks eventually have the dad sell his daughter to be gangbanged by cloned niggers and the Crew is all>hooray, we enlightened themOr the episode where Retarded-Crystal-Galactus is destroying worlds, but Picard is all>fuck dem people, the Federation doesn't believe in killingso when the mother of a dead kid manages to kill it, Data goes>beep-boop I have downloaded your son's personality and he hates youIt's all just so selfrighteously dumb. I greatly enjoyed TOS back in the day, but TNG just killed any desire I had to maybe try DS9. Trek to me is the worst of all major SF franchises, and while Wars is "less intellectual" I'd argue it's far smarter and more important to humanity.
