Really, the theme of heat plays a major part of the plot. A lot of that shit got exerted because it was so fucking hot and everyone was on edge.

If you lived in a neighborhood like that, you could see what Spike was going for. People just do crazier things when it's hot and that was a time where you probably had one A/C in the entire house and you couldn't turn it on until sunset.
