Only in the first film. They basically started humanizing Apollo in the second film when he admits he failed because he didn't cleanly beat Rocky (IIRC he won by technical decision after the two fought the full 25 round limit with no clear winner) and demanded a rematch. By the third film, Ricky and Apollo become friends
