>>223207560Critics almost always glaze Cregger despite putting out largely mediocre movies. This will be praised by the usual crowd who look down on stuff like horror games or the actual horror genre in general.
I've never been a console gamer (PC master race), but do RE fans prefer the movies to be action-slop like the Paul WS Anderson ones?
>>223207512The games are all separate stories with really weak and inconsistent continuity. In practice it's an anthology series. So why are people so mad about a new story?

>>223207989Tell me how is this a "new" story
>>223207645This movie will certainly suck, but it's stupid to give "consensus on /tv/" any weight because most people here just hate everything. When was the last time a movie came out and you could honestly say, "people on /tv/ seem to really like it!"?
>>223208483>>223208684I need the official declaration of it sucking before I jump on the bandwagon
>>223207926Both suck
>>223207989This would make sense if there had been a single adaptation of the games that actually was a real adaptation.First adapr what already exist the maybe make a new story.Otherwise why are you claiming its an adaptation?
I have a hard time believing this was going to be a Resident Evil movie until late production when they decided to slap the name on it.
The payrolled shill said it's the best so it must be true.

>>223207989Simply because they can't clap and soiface when they recognize the thing from the game.
>>223209929Funny that Disco Elysium is on there considering the game is an adaptation of a novel.

This is a very interesting film. I think critics and horror fans will like it, even love it, but wider moviegoers and RE fans may prove infinitely more mixed. For example, this guy just posted his reaction and he loved the film as an Evil Dead 2-style horror comedy, but he did not like the ending.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiYMJ4jJoooAnd the thing is, I wonder how people who don't like Evil Dead, who don't want Resident Evil to be a comedy, and who REALLY don't like the ending are going to react.Filmings having endings audiences don't like is really bad for their box office legs.
>>223207512>zach creggers resident evilEver since that hack shmylanan came on the scene they just have to force the directors name in there and elevate the next new hack. Just say the damn title and stop trying to force cult followings
>>223212271Not at all. The novel is set after Disco Elysium, the game is a prequel to it.
The ending fucking sucks and makes the entire film feel kind of pointless and stupid, and it feels like Cregger does not understand the tone of Resident Evil.
>>223207512
>>223207863That thing looks like a organ transplant bag and it has nothing to do with RE's healing items, which are either green herbs or first aid sprays.

>>223212528Interestingly, the container contains a contain of green liquid used to make the anti-virus. Which is also green. Which is weird because the anti-virus being green is entirely an intention of the Anderson films.
Why do people even want 1:1 adaptations of video games? Not only would the pacing be atrocious but if you want to see RE4's story go play RE4 or watch the cutscenes on youtube.
>>223212415This is an example of why most people don't care about the complaints from gamers by the way. Make a game that isn't just a adaptation of the novel and they go "Oh well this is actually super awesome we're making a new story that uses the feature unique to the artform and expanding the setting." Then when people do the same when making movies out of video games, they act like you just pissed on the bible.

Box Office Theory Poster:Just got out of it myself>If it were called anything else, this would have been a slam dunk horror favorite. Instead Cregger decided to craft a film that attempts to emulate the gameplay of the franchise but lacks any sense of gravitas. I know Resident Evil isn't some deep franchise but the games did a much better job at making you care as oppose to whatever this abomination Cregger concocted. Austin Abrams had his shot at being a lead in a film and I'm hoping he becomes relegated to being a side character in future films he appears in as his acting ability has much charisma and depth as a grocery store bag. The film could have easily excised all mentions of Raccoon City and Umbrella for their mention plays very little significance in terms of the plot that is so paper thin and comes across like it was written by someone who quite honestly should be kept away from any franchise. Cregger’s overuse of gags and having Austin esentially be a bumbling idiot that feels like a 2 week old 7-11 reheated leftover lf his character in Weapons shows how littlr care and imagination has left. Elements that Cregger does utilize from the franchise feels a like dollar store grab bag as the elements are used so sparcely and As if they were retrofitted in the script once it became greenlit as Resident Evil film. >Overall a adequate survival horror movie that in its attempt to replicate the gameplay of Resident Evil forgot what Resident Evil was about. And yeah that ending is going to be divisive. This film is going to be a clusterfuck word-of-mouth-wise. Far moreso than any previous RE film.
>>223213222"Blue for the virus, green for the anti-virus" is a mantra the films came up with. It's why the anti-virus in those films is always green and why it is literally never green in the games. Capcom can't actually use the green anti-virus and especially can't use the helix spiral vials. This movie doesn't have the helix spirals, but the anti-virus is green. I assume his cowriter added that.
>>223213575>"Blue for the virus, green for the anti-virus"Damn. I have the dvd but it's been so long that I forgot about this.

The only twist imo was Wesker being a traitor. Also, an adaptation of the first game gives the director a chance to show the canon ending with the four survivors Not even the remake did that.

Presales for the session I am attending on Friday. This thing is fucked internationally. They basically traded away Resident Evil's global audience for American comedy horror fans.
>>223216866>zombies being mass produced by a virus was in people's mind long agoResident Evil actually popularized that. The idea that zombies are a result of a man-made pathogen was practically unheard of before then. The closest thing was Trioxin but that's a nasty toxic chemical, not a contagious disease.

They also said that nothing about the film felt like Resident Evil and the easter eggs felt shoehorned in, and Umbrella felt nothing like Umbrella, and the film simply didn't feel anything like RE: Apocalypse which also had ordinary characters trying to survive the Raccoon City incident.
All they fucking needed was some hot guy as Leon. That's all they fucked needed to do. But no he wanted to kill the main character in the end so no Leon. Well, he probably doesn't even know who Leon is anyway.

>>223218012>>223218234I also watched it myself and yeah while i did ultimately enjoy and like the movie, the ending is pretty shit, it really makes you feel like "what the hell was even the whole point then"And yeah the movie doesn't feel all that Resident Evil too, its actually more like Evil Dead honestly with all the comedic parts, doesn't mean the movie wasn't scary though, there actually quite a few really good tension scenes and also a few good jump scares, one of which was so good not only did it make me jump out of my seat but pretty much most of the theater audiences that i was watching with.Overall i still think its a really good horror movie, might even be the best RE movie but that's the problem. Can you even call this a Resident Evil movie?
when castle wolfenstein movie?
>>223218311I've been looking at box office tracking and the ending could fuck this movie. I mean we saw something similar with 28 Years Later, also from Sony, where the ending was so fucking stupid and apparently nobody in test screenings identified it as incredibly fucking stupid. And it dominated post-release discourse. A bad ending sours the whole experience and tends to become magnified with time. The whole reason Paul Anderson fought Sony so hard over this ending (they didn't want to pay for it because the crane and stuff was expensive) was that he knew the film had to end on a kick-ass note. Bleak, but hell yea. This film's ending is the total opposite of hell yea.
I don't understand why Cregger felt the need to ruin Umbrella and ruin Raccoon City and ruin the t-virus and also ruin the ending.
>best horror film of the yearUh no, that would be Obsession. An original film with an original idea. Not some dumb video game shit.
>>223218785
I spoke to someone who said that the entire theatre in their session was silent after the ending. No applause, no cheering, just "What the hell was that?" silence.
this is resident evil, remember?
>>223218785Obsession is 3/10 bullshit starring two charisma voids shot in Tick Tock screen ratio. Only way why it is relevant is because Reddit turned it into a dumping ground for their pathetic dating lives. They even named the guy Bear to kowtow to Karen media treds.
>>223218847I remember them being dogshit
>>223218847what we are seeing is fake responces to a generic zombie movie no oone asked for buy a guy trying to cash in and make a name for himself by stealing the resident evil franchise name
they constantly tell the directors name as a sort of way to make him stand out and appear " special" , they did the same for Eli Roth and on one ever talks about him anymore do they
>>223207842I've been saying this for years. An adaptation of an existing piece of media doesn't have to be faithful. Look at The Shining. It's often cited as one of the best horror movies ever, but uses the book only as inspiration for its own ideas and themes. Steven King famously hated this, but seriously, who gives a shit?
>>223218847Cregger could never make a film like this.Jean Baudrillard once wrote that, "Disneyland is presented as imaginary in order to make us believe that the rest is real." This is the purpose of the Hive in Resident Evil. The presentation of an overtly fake world to trick us into believing the world outside, the "real" world that Alice exits into, is not a simulation.

>>223218234I think overall the third act is a little lame because the MC wasnt given a lot of weapons nor was he given a rocket launcher. Umbrella was not shown to be truly evil either, the umbrella people we see seem like lower level incompetent buffoons. The ending kinda dragged on a little, I felt like they could have cut to black and left it a little ambiguous but they chose to have the MC turn into a giant tyrant style monster while having the scientists comedically dying one by one, felt like they could have done the ending a little better Overall i like it a lot more than the previous resident evil movies and feels like it pays a lot of homage to the games.
>>223218998The third act completely misunderstands Resident Evil. It doesn't understand Umbrella, doesn't understand how the games actually play, doesn't understand their sense of humour, doesn't understand any of it. It's such a baffling decision to make Evil Dead Courier when you were hired to make Resident Evil.
>>223217110Hopefully AI will finally turn these guys into fast food delivery workers as God intended
>>223218998>>223219022If Anderson were still in charge, Bryan would have sacrificed himself to save the scientists like how Nemesis sacrificed himself to save Alice. In Resident Evil, the living inherit the burdens of the dead. The responsibility of the living is to never stop fighting so that the dead did not die in vain.It does not feel to me like Cregger understands this.
>>223218847I've only seen the first three and none of those were good. The first one was passable when I was a kid but it doesn't hold up.
>>223219056They're never gonna top 5 anyway. It's wild how much Cregger does not understand Resident Evil's message of hope and determination.
So we're pretending the Paul WS Anderson films were good now?
at least in the old resident evil movies we had umbrella kino to look forward to
>>223218977The way I see it there are two ways to adapt something well: 1) be a faithful adaptation in spirit, not necessarily a 1:1 transformarion (Jacksons Lord of the Rings is a prime exaple), 2) use the source material as a jumping off point to tell a story thats not the same but just as good in other ways (High and Low, Solaris, Stalker, Blade Runner, Starship Troopers) or surpass it (Psycho, Shining). Most adaptations these days do something different but its complete slop.
had people not enjoyed the netflix series and that new movie they made, we woudn;t be here now talking about this dude we did it to ourselves i suppose. now we have to deal with this dude doing whatever he wants with the franchise .
>>223219114I loved how industrial and sinister Umbrella sounded in the old soundtracks. So much good music. And each film sounded totally different, but still sounded like RE.>>223218998Cregger genuinely doesn't seem to understand that Umbrella represent industrialized evil. They are not goofy scientists. They are people in service of a genuinely evil organization. The original films depicted Umbrella through the Hive, through Raccoon, and through the world. "Our business is life itself" is a genius slogan that encapsulates the core idea that Umbrella believe they are entitled to your body, your mind, your soul. That they are like a virus, like a parasite. That Raccoon City had been subverted and corrupted and infected long before the outbreak.
>>223219131Anderson's Event Horizon, amusingly, is an adaptation of Solaris. Everyone noticed this back in 1997, but it's less noticed now. The bathroom scene with the mirror is a direct reference, and really the film as a whole is just Solaris with horror elements. Even the scene of the unseen force trying to bang its way through the steel door.>>223219139You squeezed Constantin Film, you hammered them to the point of desperation. And in their desperation, they turned to a man they didn't fully understand.
>>223211594But the original games are very cinematic. They're short, have few but distinct characters and locations, straightforward storylines and neatly fit into established film genres (1 being a haunted house film, 2 a post-apocalyptic one, 3 a slasher film etc.). It would be extremely easy to adapt these games at least somewhat faithfully, Silent Hill (2006) style.
>>223219170The key thing is that they don't own the characters from the games. So they are always going to replace the game characters with new ones.>It would be extremely easy to adapt these games at least somewhat faithfully, Silent Hill (2006) style. At a certain point you just get Anderson's movies but with less cool music and aesthetics. As Jill put it, "I'm good, but I'm not THAT good." Something that haunts Resident Evil adaptations is that the film versions are better visually, better musically, better aesthetically. So there was never really an urge to make an exact stylistic rehash because it just came off as lame and stupid.
The movie is bafflingly non-RE-like. I don't think there is a single Umbrella logo in the entire film. You know how Umbrella literally OWN Raccoon City in Apocalypse? Well, not here. The world also feels completely empty. It's the outbreak but there's zero sense of urban chaos, people trying to evacuate, any of that. There's no Umbrella security forces. There's no really any police presence to speak of.
Apparently Shay Hatten the co-writer said that most of the easter eggs in this film were actually added during post-production.
Erm...CREGGERSE?
>>223212516what causes this creature to form?
The biggest misstep this dude did was assume RE fans would like something that didn't constantly throw memberberries at them.We RE fans are like sub 60 IQ mongoloids that point at the screen when something familiar from our childhood appears on screen. If you can't give us that then I'm sorry your movie sucks.
>>223219375Anderson refused to do memberberries for the most part and his films felt like Resident Evil. They had RE's sensibility. This film doesn't.What it has instead is a bunch of pointless I recognized the thing references added in post.

A lot of the positive reviews are like, "The ending was unexpected, and that makes it good" which has uncomfortable parallels to the dogshit ending of Barbarian.
>>223219769It sounds like the end of weapons but he fucked up
>>223219775No it's way closer to Barbarian because Bryan has an opportunity to do the right thing. He has his little moment of personal growth. And then he completely undoes it by hiding his infection and entering the lab. He could have handed over the bag and then run away as fast as he could. To protect the cure from himself. Cregger does the exact same shitty shocking reversal thing like in Barbarian where AJ is all I've got to be better, and then he pushes Tess off the roof 5 minutes later. It makes the film feel pointless. It makes Bryan feel like he has no arc and the entire film is just in service of Cregger's black comedy sensibilities.

It's why Apocalypse is full of dutch angles and why Extinction has multiple scenes that seem to have been shot by strapping a camera to a shopping trolley.)
>>223220064I like your brand of shitposting. Very well I will pretend to like those films as well. People will mald.
>>223219097His first three films from Shopping to Event Horizon aren't bad.
>>223220088Event Horizon was good. Haven't seen his other non-resident evil -movies.
>>223219804>He has his little moment of personal growth.him calling his girlfriend and saying he's ready to be a father is just zach creggar talking to his actual wife. it's his self insert moment because he's 40 something and afraid to have kids up until noe. he can't keep his gay little poser life out of his movies. they're all just him speaking directly to someone in some way or another. hack faggot
>>223220105Event Horizon may be derivative but I had a ton of fun with it.
>>223220064Extinction is by the guy who made Highlander and it really is a beautifully shot film. Looks a lot like Razorback, his first horror movie.>>223219097The last truly good film he made was Death Race, but his later stuff has its merits. I really like the ending of Pompeii. He always had a good sense for how to make endings that felt emotionally satisfying. Everyone dies in Pompeii and the fires consume the two leads as they kiss, but it feels poignant.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vi0LCRtU7Ow
>>223220214Razorback completely surprised me. It's one of the most beautiful looking movies of its era and its a fucking killer boar movie.
>>223215235>shotgun shellsThat faggot director really expects people to söyface and cum all over themselves just because he put a couple of direct references in his not-RE movie.
>did I kill Trevor Moore just to go through an endless humiliation ritual and pretend it's a career?

>>223220264The lighting in Razorback is incredible. But that's what happens when a god-tier music video director tries his hand at making an outback horror flick. It's a pity a lot of his later stuff wasn't good or successful. He did a Teen Wolf film a few years ago that sucked. Swimming Upstream was pretty good. It's also weird how he never directed any more music videos after the 80s.
>>223220342I absolutely agree the lighting looks great. Same with the set design.
Just watched it heres my takeI never watched Cregger but I heard good things about his other films>movie feels like an actual survival horror>he doesn't have any weapons have to scrounge around to get resource>like the games you have to go from point A to B to C etc.>feels like the games each major scene has a "boss fight">on the nose reference like med spray, herbs and typewriter>movie is not about zombies its more about the mutation junji ito shit>no game characters>like most of Cregger's movies its horror comedy so there are jokes>movie ends with the lead becoming infected, kills everyone and destroying the cure which works tying in RE2 since theres nothing else but to nuke racoon city It's an ok horror movie but dont expect it be resident evil I mean I went in not knowing Creggers and I like the RE GamesThis movie makes me want to watch Barbarian and Weapons
