I mean we saw something similar with 28 Years Later, also from Sony, where the ending was so fucking stupid and apparently nobody in test screenings identified it as incredibly fucking stupid. I think overall the third act is a little lame because the MC wasnt given a lot of weapons nor was he given a rocket launcher. Umbrella was not shown to be truly evil either, the umbrella people we see seem like lower level incompetent buffoons. The way I see it there are two ways to adapt something well: 1) be a faithful adaptation in spirit, not necessarily a 1:1 transformarion (Jacksons Lord of the Rings is a prime exaple), 2) use the source material as a jumping off point to tell a story thats not the same but just as good in other ways (High and Low, Solaris, Stalker, Blade Runner, Starship Troopers) or surpass it (Psycho, Shining). Something that haunts Resident Evil adaptations is that the film versions are better visually, better musically, better aesthetically. So there was never really an urge to make an exact stylistic rehash because it just came off as lame and stupid.

The movie is bafflingly non-RE-like. I don't think there is a single Umbrella logo in the entire film. You know how Umbrella literally OWN Raccoon City in Apocalypse? Well, not here. The world also feels completely empty. It's the outbreak but there's zero sense of urban chaos, people trying to evacuate, any of that. There's no Umbrella security forces. There's no really any police presence to speak of.

The biggest misstep this dude did was assume RE fans would like something that didn't constantly throw memberberries at them.
We RE fans are like sub 60 IQ mongoloids that point at the screen when something familiar from our childhood appears on screen.

No it's way closer to Barbarian because Bryan has an opportunity to do the right thing. He has his little moment of personal growth. And then he completely undoes it by hiding his infection and entering the lab. He could have handed over the bag and then run away as fast as he could. To protect the cure from himself. Cregger does the exact same shitty shocking reversal thing like in Barbarian where AJ is all I've got to be better, and then he pushes Tess off the roof 5 minutes later.

It makes the film feel pointless. It makes Bryan feel like he has no arc and the entire film is just in service of Cregger's black comedy sensibilities.

Yes, they are. The fact you call them his movies shows his strong his voice is, how distinct and memorable they are. (They actually had three different directors who were all completely different in directorial style. It's why Apocalypse is full of dutch angles and why Extinction has multiple scenes that seem to have been shot by strapping a camera to a shopping trolley.)

The last truly good film he made was Death Race, but his later stuff has its merits. I really like the ending of Pompeii. He always had a good sense for how to make endings that felt emotionally satisfying. Everyone dies in Pompeii and the fires consume the two leads as they kiss, but it feels poignant.

The lighting in Razorback is incredible. But that's what happens when a god-tier music video director tries his hand at making an outback horror flick.

It's a pity a lot of his later stuff wasn't good or successful. He did a Teen Wolf film a few years ago that sucked. Swimming Upstream was pretty good. It's also weird how he never directed any more music videos after the 80s.

I never watched Cregger but I heard good things about his other films

>movie feels like an actual survival horror
>he doesn't have any weapons have to scrounge around to get resource
>like the games you have to go from point A to B to C etc.
>feels like the games each major scene has a "boss fight"
>on the nose reference like med spray, herbs and typewriter
>movie is not about zombies its more about the mutation junji ito shit
>no game characters
>like most of Cregger's movies its horror comedy so there are jokes
>movie ends with the lead becoming infected, kills everyone and destroying the cure which works tying in RE2 since theres nothing else but to nuke racoon city

It's an ok horror movie but dont expect it be resident evil
I mean I went in not knowing Creggers and I like the RE Games
This movie makes me want to watch Barbarian and Weapons
