For the first 25 minutes, the film leads you to believe Tom Cruise is an old man named Digger Rockwell, one of the richest people on Earth. He has a cat that is barely alive, and a climate scientist in Greenland, along with about 30 other men working for him, is trying to warn him over video chat about a massive crack in the ice that is releasing methane into the atmosphere. Digger, however, insists on continuing to drill for oil. Scientists at his mansion eventually reveal that the entire team in Greenland died in a fiery explosion, and that a glacier roughly seven times the size of Boston is now heading toward Europe and will devastate the continent.

Around the 30-minute mark, the film introduces its major twist: none of these events are real. Tom Cruise isn’t actually Digger Rockwell, he’s an actor portraying him in a play commissioned by the real Digger’s grandson, played by Jesse Plemons, several years after Digger’s actions devastated the planet. From that point on, the story unfolds across multiple layers. One storyline focuses on the stage play being performed, where Riz Ahmed plays a climate scientist who advises Digger and John Goodman portrays the U.S. President. Within the play, American leaders, including Digger, are depicted as largely incompetent conservative figures who keep making a bad situation worse. The other storyline focuses on Cruise’s character as he immerses himself in the Digger role and comes to believe Digger was actually a hero and he can channel Digger in order to save the world for real.
