Antz was literally a rush job to beat Pixar to the table. I think it was Katzenberg that left immediately prior, and gave all the deets to Dreamworks so that they could sneak out a "3D bug movie" before Pixar did theirs. Turns out being first doesn't mean shit, especially when your characters are ugly as sin.

The combination of wordy dialogue and brown on brown imagery with whimsical ant models was artistically incoherent. Today I recognize it as typical work of an insecure or unsure writing process, one lacking in moral force for whatever reason. It doesn't have any real drive to exist. The story is about Woody Allen being a Tramp-esque revolutionary pipsqueak, so why not just make that film? The use of ant CGI and this whole ant metaphor more than exposes the frailty of the script, it actually demolishes any remaining potential, because the requirements of a CGI ant story are totally at odds with a movie about Woody Allen's tramp. They were written together because one can't support the other, and it shows. Oh, it shows.
