What did he win, exactly? The most baffling part of season four for me was that Walt had it all. He finally had a clean operation, a great coworker, a good boss, a solid team, and he was making tons of money; he threw it all away, for what reason exactly? Nobody was out to get him, yet he decided "Gus must die." We had Walt display brilliance in earlier seasons, so why did he get so stupid in season four? Did creative write themselves into a corner and realize they had created the perfect scenario for Walt and needed to muck it up for the drama? "I won"; no, he in fact lost.

He wanted Gale to perfect Walt’s formula and originally was just going to wait for him to croak from cancer within the 3 months or whatever, until Gus saw that Jesse and Walt went “splitsville” then offered Walt 12 months for $15 million, which really was the first major red flag that Gus was going to kill Walt at some point. It’s why Walt drove onto oncoming traffic and almost got himself killed, he knew he was trapped with no way out.
