dissipation of mist happens on a daily basis due to humidity flux.
for the mist to sit there it would have to be pumping out enough mist to comparable to something like a seasonal storm's humidity levels. you know like a rain storm that last for like 3-4 days or a hurricane, etc etc.
Which even at the height of industrial pollution cities never got so bad that you couldn't flat out see.
So the portal would have to be massive.

In the novel, it's speculated that Connecticut becomes a safezone, so for whatever amount of time the expansion of the mist took place. at some point weeks and or months later it dissipates in some way to maintain a regional issue of north east united states.
for it to be that bad, I mean a large portion of the world would of had to been covered.

The ending is so over the top miserable that it just makes me roll my eyes. Nelson from the Simpsons might as well have been on that truck of all the horrible people being rescued to point and laugh at him as he wails on the ground.
It's a deeply Jewish plot, I just can't prove it.

The book was better. The ending was also better and in a way it was much bleaker, just less edgy.
