You're misremembering. He took sick days because he had faked a serious illness and was milking money from his health insurance. Back when they actually paid some money to people instead of denying everything.

That said, his room was one of the worst traps designed by Kramer and was the most impossible to escape from. Amamda and Hoffman made traps that directly killed. It's hard to argue Kramer was fair with this one or that horrible razor wire one. Or key in the bath tub. What a fun, 'fair' game to test your will to live Jigsaw.
